IB in Dubai — The Globally Portable Curriculum

The International Baccalaureate offers four programmes: PYP (Primary Years, ages 3–12), MYP (Middle Years, ages 11–16), DP (Diploma Programme, ages 16–19), and CP (Career Programme, ages 16–19). The IB Diploma is the high school qualification recognised by 5,000+ universities in 160 countries — including Oxford, Cambridge, all Ivy League universities, and top institutions in Australia, Canada, and across Europe.

Dubai has around 15–20 schools authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) — a smaller pool than the British curriculum sector. The premier Outstanding-rated IB schools (GEMS World Academy, Dubai International Academy) attract families specifically committed to the IB pathway and global university options.

IB Diploma is accepted globally — A-Levels require UK/Commonwealth context

If your family relocates every 3–5 years across different countries, IB is the most pragmatic curriculum choice. IB World Schools exist in 160 countries — your child can continue the same curriculum framework wherever you go. A-Levels are less transferable outside the UK Commonwealth.

The 4 IB Programmes — What They Are

PYP — Primary Years Programme
Ages 3–12 (FS1–Year 6)

Inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning. Focuses on developing the whole child — intellectual, personal, social, emotional. No formal external exams. Culminates in PYP Exhibition (collaborative inquiry project).

MYP — Middle Years Programme
Ages 11–16 (Years 7–11)

5-year programme challenging students to connect learning to the real world. Includes 8 subject groups, a Personal Project (independent research at Year 10), and interdisciplinary units. Assessed internally with IBO moderation.

DP — Diploma Programme
Ages 16–19 (Years 12–13)

The globally recognised IB Diploma qualification. 6 subjects (3 HL + 3 SL), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (4,000 words), and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). Graded 1–7 per subject; max 45 total points.

CP — Career Programme
Ages 16–19

Combines IB DP courses with vocational study. Less common in Dubai schools. Designed for students pursuing technical or professional career pathways alongside academic IB subjects.

IB DP Structure — The 6-Subject Hexagon

IB DP students must take 6 subjects across 6 defined groups: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Each subject is studied at either Higher Level (HL — 240 hours) or Standard Level (SL — 150 hours). Students choose 3 HL and 3 SL subjects. The DP also includes three core requirements: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and CAS.

IB DP grading: 42 + 3 bonus points = 45 maximum

Each of the 6 subjects is graded 1–7 (7 is highest). Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay together contribute up to 3 additional bonus points. Maximum total: 45 points. University benchmark scores: 38+ points for top UK Russell Group/Australian Go8; 40+ for Oxbridge/Ivy League. Pass requirement: 24+ total points.

7-Step IB School Application Process

  1. 1

Understand IB programme structure and assess fit

IB has four programmes: PYP (Primary Years Programme, ages 3–12), MYP (Middle Years Programme, ages 11–16), DP (Diploma Programme, ages 16–19 — the high school qualification), and CP (Career Programme, ages 16–19). Most families choose schools offering the full IB Continuum (PYP + MYP + DP) for consistency. The IB DP is the qualification recognised by universities. PYP/MYP are educational methodologies — not stand-alone qualifications.
    Time: 1–2 weeks research
  2. 2

Shortlist IB World Schools authorised for your target programme

IB World Schools must be authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation for each programme they offer. Verify authorisation at ibo.org — not just the school website. Dubai has a relatively small number of fully IB-authorised schools versus British schools. Outstanding-rated IB schools (GEMS World Academy, Dubai International Academy) are the most competitive — register on waitlists immediately.
    Time: 2–3 weeks
  3. 3

Register on waitlists for Outstanding IB schools immediately

GEMS World Academy (Healthcare City) and Dubai International Academy (Emirates Hills) are the premier IB Outstanding schools. Waitlists for popular year groups (PYP Year 1, MYP Year 7, DP entry) can be 12–18 months. Waitlist registration fees are typically AED 500–1,000. Register before formal applications open if possible.
Cost: AED 500–1,000 waitlist registrationTime: Register as soon as Dubai move is confirmed
  4. 4

Attend school tours and request IB-specific information

Ask specifically: What is the average IB Diploma score over the last 3 years? What percentage of students achieved 30+ points (university-competitive)? What percentage achieved 38+ (top university competitive)? What is the school's Extended Essay supervision system? How is CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) coordinated? How does the school support IB DP students who struggle with the workload?
Time: Schedule 4–6 weeks before application
  5. 5

    Gather documents and submit applications

Required documents: birth certificate (attested for non-UAE origin), previous school transfer certificate, two years of academic transcripts/reports, passport copy, UAE visa copy, recent assessment results (CAT4, MAP, IB-format assessments if transferring from another IB school), passport-size photos, and immunisation records. For MYP transfers, provide previous MYP grade records if available.
Cost: AED 300–800 application fee per schoolTime: Apply 6–18 months ahead depending on school tier
  6. 6

    Complete IB admissions assessments

IB schools typically run cognitive ability assessments (CAT4 or GL Assessment) plus English and Mathematics evaluations. Some schools include a short IB-style inquiry task to assess whether students are comfortable with open-ended, question-led learning. An interview with the admissions team or year group coordinator is common at Outstanding schools. Previous IB assessment results from MYP are helpful for DP entry.
Time: 1–2 hour assessment; results within 2 weeks
  7. 7

Accept offer, pay deposit, and prepare for IB methodology

On receiving an offer, review the fee schedule carefully — IB schools typically charge a premium over comparable-rated British schools (AED 5,000–20,000 per year higher at the same KHDA tier). Registration deposits are AED 5,000–25,000. Most importantly: prepare your child for the IB learning philosophy. Students transitioning from highly structured exam-focused schools (British GCSE, Indian CBSE) sometimes need 1–2 terms to adapt to inquiry-based, self-directed IB learning.
Cost: AED 5,000–25,000 depositTime: Accept within 2–4 weeks of offer

Full IB Continuum Cost — FS1 to Grade 12 (DP Year 2)

IB DP vs A-Level — Decision Framework

Reasons to choose IB Diploma

  • IB Diploma is accepted by 5,000+ universities in 160 countries — no other qualification offers this level of global portability for internationally mobile families
  • IB DP structure forces breadth: 6 subjects across sciences, humanities, languages, and mathematics — students cannot specialise too early and arrive at university more broadly educated
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay develop independent critical thinking and research skills that are explicitly valued by Oxford, Cambridge, and US liberal arts colleges
  • CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) builds the extracurricular portfolio that US and UK universities increasingly expect — it is built into the curriculum, not left to chance
  • IB assessment combines 80% external exams with 20% internal coursework — students who perform consistently rather than only in high-stakes final exams benefit
  • IB DP scores are transparent globally: Oxford minimum for most subjects is 38–40 points; Ivy League looks for 38–44 points — the scoring system is well-understood by university admissions teams worldwide

Reasons to consider A-Levels instead

  • IB DP workload is genuinely demanding: 6 subjects simultaneously plus TOK, EE (4,000-word essay), and CAS — some students find this exhausting compared to A-Level's focused 3–4 subjects
  • A-Level specialisation allows deeper mastery in chosen subjects — a student who knows they want to study Medicine and has three science A-Levels at A* may present a stronger specialist profile than an IB student with HL Biology, HL Chemistry, and HL Maths
  • IB schools in Dubai are fewer in number and command a fee premium — the IB Continuum pipeline (PYP to DP) can cost AED 5,000–20,000/year more than equivalent British curriculum schools
  • IB DP grading (1–7 per subject) requires specific explanation to parents unfamiliar with the system — the conversion to UCAS Tariff points or equivalent is less intuitive than A-Level grades
  • For Indian families, IB credentials require conversion for Indian university entry — CBSE Class 12 is a simpler pathway back to Indian universities
  • IB DP is a qualification that runs for exactly 2 years in Grades 11–12 — switching out of an IB school at DP level mid-cycle disrupts the programme significantly more than switching A-Level schools

IB DP is not easier than A-Levels — it is different

Some families choose IB DP assuming it will be easier than A-Levels because it does not have one final high-stakes exam. This is a misunderstanding — IB DP is demanding by design. The 6-subject breadth, TOK, Extended Essay, and CAS requirements make it a significant workload. Students who excel in IB tend to have broad intellectual curiosity and strong time management. Students who prefer deep specialisation and exam-focused study often do better in A-Levels.

Choosing IB DP HL Subjects — Strategic Guide

Students choose 3 Higher Level (HL) subjects and 3 Standard Level (SL) subjects across the six IB subject groups. HL subject choice is critical — university conditional offers are almost always based on HL grades. Choose HL subjects to align with your intended university course.

Medicine (UK/global)
Recommended HLs: HL Biology + HL Chemistry + HL Mathematics (or Physics)

Oxford, Imperial, UCL Medicine typically require HL Biology 6+ and HL Chemistry 6+

Engineering / Computer Science
Recommended HLs: HL Mathematics AA + HL Physics + HL Chemistry or CS

Imperial, ETH Zurich, MIT look for HL Maths AA 6–7 and HL Physics 6+

Law / PPE / Humanities
Recommended HLs: HL English + HL History or Economics + HL Language or another Humanities

Oxford PPE often looks for HL Economics or History 6–7; strong TOK and EE profile helps

Business / Economics
Recommended HLs: HL Economics + HL Mathematics AI or AA + HL Business Management

LSE requires HL Maths at grade 6 or 7; INSEAD for MBA later values breadth

Architecture / Design
Recommended HLs: HL Visual Arts + HL Mathematics + HL English or History

Bartlett, AA School look for strong HL Visual Arts portfolio plus analytical HL

US Liberal Arts (undecided major)
Recommended HLs: Balanced HL selection across sciences and humanities

Ivy League admissions value breadth — strong HL combination across different groups

IB DP is accepted equally with A-Levels at all UK universities

UCAS publishes an official IB Tariff conversion: 45 points = 168 UCAS points; 40 points = 144; 36 points = 122; 32 points = 100. UK universities publish their IB entry requirements directly on their websites. Oxford and Cambridge explicitly state both A-Levels and IB are accepted — do not assume A-Levels are preferred over IB for UK applications.
