96-Hour Itinerary — Extra Days
With 4 days you can add an Abu Dhabi day trip and deeper exploration. Here is how to use the extra 48 hours.
Core Dubai Highlights
Follow the 48-hour itinerary above — Burj Khalifa, Gold Souk, Al Fahidi, JBR, desert safari.
Abu Dhabi Day Trip
Hire a Careem/taxi (AED 200 one-way) or join a tour. Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (free entry, stunning), Louvre Abu Dhabi (AED 63), and Yas Island (Ferrari World or Warner Bros). Return by evening.
Atlantis Aquaventure or Dubai Beaches
Palm Jumeirah's Aquaventure Water Park (AED 299 for day pass) is one of the world's best. Alternatively, a morning at Kite Beach (free) with watersports hire. Noon checkout and depart to airport.

Getting from the Airport to the City
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is very well connected to the city. The Metro is the fastest and cheapest option; taxis and Careem offer more flexibility.
| Method | Cost | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai Metro (Red Line) | AED 9.50 (from DXB Terminal 3) | 30–35 min to Downtown | Best value option. Buy a Nol card (AED 25 including AED 14 credit) at station machines. Runs every 3–6 min during peak hours. |
| Taxi | AED 60–80 to Downtown / Marina | 20–30 min (no traffic) | Metered RTA taxis from the official taxi rank outside arrivals. No negotiation needed — all metered. Add 25–30% during peak traffic. |
| Careem / Uber | AED 40–60 to most areas | 20–35 min | Book via app before exiting baggage claim. Often cheaper than taxis off-peak. Use from the designated ride-hailing pickup zones. |
| Nol Card Purchase | AED 25 (card) + load credit | Available 24/7 at station | Buy at any metro station ticket machine. Top up as needed. Works on metro, tram, bus, and water bus throughout Dubai. |
AED Cash
Withdraw AED at the airport ATMs (best rates) or exchange your currency at arrivals. Most taxis and small vendors still prefer cash.
Nol Card
Buy a Nol card at the airport Metro station machines before exiting. You will need it for any Metro, bus, or tram journey across Dubai.
SIM Card
Buy a UAE SIM (Etisalat/du) at the airport for AED 50–100. Unlimited data packages are available and essential for navigating via Google Maps and booking Careem.
6–8 Hour Connection Itinerary
Got a long layover but not quite enough for a full stopover? Here's a tight but achievable half-day itinerary — total activity time around 5.5 hours, leaving 2 hours for airport return and security.
| Time | Stop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 – 0:30 | Metro to Gold Souk | Red Line from airport to Union, then walk. Buy a Nol card at the station. |
| 0:30 – 1:30 | Gold Souk & Spice Souk | Browse the famous covered gold market and spice souk. No obligation to buy — just experience Old Dubai. |
| 1:30 – 1:50 | Abra across the Creek | AED 1 traditional wooden boat to Al Fahidi side. One of Dubai's most iconic 2-minute journeys. |
| 1:50 – 2:50 | Al Fahidi Heritage District + Coffee Museum | Walk the wind tower lanes, visit Coffee Museum (free entry). Best preserved historic area in Dubai. |
| 2:50 – 3:20 | Taxi to Dubai Mall | ~AED 30–40 by taxi or Careem, 20–25 min drive. |
| 3:20 – 4:50 | Burj Khalifa + Dubai Fountain | At the Top viewing deck from AED 169 (book online). Fountain shows every 30 min from 6pm. |
| 4:50 – 5:20 | Metro back to airport | Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station on Red Line. Leave at least 2 hours before departure. |
Dubai Airport Duty-Free — Worth Your Time
DXB duty-free is consistently ranked among the world's best. Top picks:
- •Gold jewellery — No import duty, competitive pricing, certified by Dubai government
- •Oud perfumes — Unique to the region, excellent gift boxes, hard to find at these prices elsewhere
- •Dates — Premium gift boxes AED 50–200, exceptional quality, long shelf life
- •Electronics — Some deals on Apple products and cameras (check your home country duty allowance)
- •Liquor — 4-litre allowance for most destinations; good selection and prices
- •Raffle tickets — AED 200–500 for luxury car and cash prize draws. A Dubai institution since 1983.
Al Seef Heritage District
Opened in 2018, Al Seef is a beautifully executed waterfront district on Dubai Creek that blends traditional Arabian architecture with modern dining and retail. Less crowded than Al Fahidi and often overlooked by short-stay visitors — which makes it feel genuinely authentic.
Location
10-minute walk from Al Fahidi Heritage District along the Creek. Free to explore. Open late into the evening with waterfront restaurants.
What to Do
Creek-view restaurants, boutique shops selling local crafts, traditional architecture photography, and evening dhow boat views. Beautiful at dusk.
Best Time
Late afternoon to evening. Daytime heat can be intense; the area comes alive as the sun sets and the creek lights reflect off the water.
Common Stopover Mistakes to Avoid
- •Global Village: Only open October–April. Don't plan a visit without checking the season — it will be closed in summer.
- •Summer outdoor activities (June–September): 45°C+ heat makes outdoor sightseeing genuinely dangerous in midday hours. Stick to indoor attractions or early mornings.
- •Metro closing time: The Metro stops around midnight (1am on Thursdays and Saturdays). Plan your return journey or have Careem/taxi as a backup.
- •Dubai Mall size: It is genuinely enormous — over 500 stores across multiple floors. Allow at least 2–3 hours and use the mall's own app for navigation.
- •Trying to see everything: Dubai rewards depth, not breadth. Pick 3–4 highlights and enjoy them properly rather than rushing through 10 things.
