UAE Visa Guide

Everything you need to know about entering, living, and working in Dubai — from 30-day tourist stamps to 10-year Golden Visas. Real costs, real requirements, no fluff.

Start Here: Which Visa Do You Need?

  • Just visiting for 1–3 months? Check if your passport qualifies for visa on arrival (free, no paperwork).
  • Moving for work? Your employer handles the employment visa — you focus on medical and Emirates ID.
  • Freelancer or remote worker? Look at the Green Visa or the DTCM Remote Work Visa.
  • Buying property or high earner? The Golden Visa gives 10-year self-sponsored residency.
  • Retiring? The Retirement Visa requires AED 2M property, AED 1M savings, or AED 20K/month income.

All UAE Visa Types

Visa on Arrival (30-day)

30 days (extendable once) Free for 49+ countries

Key Requirements

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel or host address)
  • Sufficient funds for the stay
  • No pre-arrangement needed — stamp issued at airport

Citizens of EU member states, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and 40+ other nations receive a free 30-day stamp on arrival. The stamp can be extended once for an additional 30 days for AED 250 via the ICP app or an Amer centre.

Visit Visa (30 or 90-day)

30 or 90 days AED 200–500

Key Requirements

  • Sponsor required: a UAE resident, hotel, or travel agency
  • Valid passport (6+ months validity)
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Return flight booking
  • Health insurance is strongly advised

Nationals who do not qualify for visa on arrival (e.g. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino passports) must obtain a pre-arranged visit visa. Airlines such as Emirates and Flydubai can act as sponsors. Single-entry and multiple-entry options are available.

Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (5-year)

5 years, up to 90 days per visit AED 650

Key Requirements

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity)
  • Application via ICP website or app
  • Recent passport photographs
  • Travel history to developed countries is an advantage
  • Sufficient funds and no prior UAE violations

Introduced in 2023, this visa allows unlimited entries with each stay up to 90 days, and you can stay a total of 180 days per year. It's ideal for frequent business visitors and those testing residency before committing. Apply directly via the ICP (icp.gov.ae) portal.

Employment / Work Visa

2–3 years (renewable) AED 3,000–6,000 (employer-sponsored)

Key Requirements

  • Valid job offer from a UAE-licensed employer
  • Medical fitness test (blood test + chest X-ray)
  • Emirates ID application (mandatory biometrics)
  • Employer submits work permit and entry permit
  • Attested educational certificates

Your employer is the legal sponsor. The full process — entry permit, status change, medical, Emirates ID, and residence stamp — typically takes 3–6 weeks. Mainland employment visas are issued by MOHRE; free zone visas are issued by the respective free zone authority.

Golden Visa (5 or 10-year)

5 years (property) or 10 years (talent/investor) AED 2,800–5,000 (government fees)

Key Requirements

  • Property investment of AED 2M+ (mortgaged up to 50% allowed)
  • OR: Monthly salary AED 30,000+ with a Bachelor's degree
  • OR: Entrepreneur with AED 500K+ project or ministry-approved startup
  • OR: Scientists, doctors, engineers in priority fields
  • OR: Outstanding students with GPA 3.8+ from accredited institutions

No employer sponsorship required. Holders can sponsor their spouse, children of any age, parents, and unlimited domestic helpers. There are no restrictions on time spent outside the UAE — you can live abroad without losing your Golden Visa status.

Green Visa (5-year)

5 years (self-renewable) AED 1,500–3,000

Key Requirements

  • Self-sponsored — no employer required
  • Skilled employees: Bachelor's or above, salary AED 15,000+/month
  • OR: Freelancers with valid UAE freelance permit
  • OR: Investors with AED 500K+ business capital
  • Proof of income and employment for the past 6 months

Launched in 2022 alongside the Golden Visa expansion, the Green Visa fills the gap between short-term work visas and the prestigious Golden Visa. It provides genuine self-sponsorship — if you lose your job, you have a 6-month grace period to find new work without needing to leave the UAE.

Freelance / Remote Work Visa

1 year (renewable) AED 3,718 (DTCM route)

Key Requirements

  • Bank statements showing ~USD 3,500/month income (last 3 months)
  • Valid health insurance policy
  • Freelance permit from DTCM, Dubai Internet City, or twofour54
  • Passport photographs and passport copy
  • Application via freelancers.ae or the relevant free zone

Dubai's Virtual Working Programme ("Digital Nomad Visa") is officially run through the DTCM at AED 3,718 all-in for one year. Several free zones — Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, TECOM — offer freelance permits in specific sectors (tech, media, design, education). This is a residency visa with work rights for your own clients only.

Student Visa

1 year (renewable for duration of study) AED 1,000–2,500

Key Requirements

  • Acceptance letter from a UAE-accredited institution (KHDA/MOE-approved)
  • Valid passport with 6+ months validity
  • Medical fitness test and Emirates ID
  • Parental consent letter (if under 18)
  • Mandatory health insurance

Universities such as NYU Abu Dhabi, American University of Dubai, Heriot-Watt, and UOWD all assist with student visa applications. Student visas do not permit employment — a separate, employer-sponsored work permit is required to take part-time jobs. Full-time students may be exempt from certain fees.

Family / Dependent Visa

Matches sponsor's visa duration AED 2,500–4,500

Key Requirements

  • Sponsor must hold a valid UAE residency visa
  • Minimum monthly salary: AED 4,000 (or AED 3,000 + housing allowance)
  • Attested marriage certificate (for spouse)
  • Attested birth certificates (for children)
  • Proof of accommodation (tenancy contract or Ejari)

Children up to age 18 can be sponsored (21 if in full-time education). Daughters of any age and sons with disabilities have no age limit. Parents can be sponsored if the resident earns AED 20,000+/month. All dependants must pass a medical fitness test and obtain Emirates ID.

Investor Visa

3 years (renewable) AED 3,000–5,000

Key Requirements

  • Business investment: minimum AED 72,000 capital in a UAE company
  • Trade licence in your name or as a partner
  • Valid passport and no criminal record
  • Medical fitness test
  • Not applicable if business is fully owned by another party

The standard investor visa is for those who own or co-own a UAE business. It's distinct from the Golden Visa property investment route. Investors in free zones follow the respective free zone's investor visa process, which often includes the free zone licence fee bundled in.

Retirement Visa (5-year)

5 years (renewable) AED 3,700 approximately

Key Requirements

  • Age 55 or above
  • Option A: Fully paid-off UAE property worth AED 2M+
  • Option B: Savings of AED 1M+ in a UAE bank account
  • Option C: Active monthly income of AED 20,000+
  • Valid health insurance covering UAE

Introduced in 2020, the retirement visa is fully self-sponsored — no employer needed. It can be renewed every 5 years as long as the financial threshold is maintained. Retirees can sponsor a spouse and children. Retirees who work part-time still need a separate work permit.

Visa on Arrival: Which Passport?

The UAE has one of the world's most accessible entry policies. Your country's category determines what you need before boarding.

GCC Residents (Expats) Also Benefit

Expats holding valid residency permits from USA, UK, EU member states, or Canada can obtain a UAE visit visa on arrival even if their home passport would normally require a pre-arranged visa. This benefit applies to first-time entries; the visa is free and valid for 30 days.

GCC Nationals — No Visa Required
BahrainKuwaitOmanQatarSaudi Arabia

GCC citizens may enter and reside in the UAE without any visa. They are treated similarly to UAE nationals for most purposes.

Citizens of these countries must obtain a visit visa before travel. A UAE resident, hotel, travel agency, or airline can act as sponsor. Some nationalities may qualify for a visa on arrival if they hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, EU, or Canada.

List Changes Frequently

The UAE updates its visa-on-arrival and free visa list periodically based on bilateral agreements. Always verify your eligibility on the ICP website (icp.gov.ae) or call the GDRFA helpline on 8005111 before travel. Airlines will also check at check-in.

Golden Visa — Complete Guide

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency scheme granting 5 or 10-year renewable residency without any employer sponsor. Introduced in 2019 and significantly expanded in 2022, it is one of the most attractive residency-by-investment programmes globally.

Property Investors

Own UAE property worth AED 2M+. Property can be mortgaged — you need AED 2M paid off (not total value). Off-plan properties from approved developers count. Multiple properties can be combined to reach AED 2M.

High Salary Professionals

Monthly salary of AED 30,000+ with a Bachelor's degree or higher. Employer must be a UAE-licensed company. Government sector employees have a lower threshold in some categories.

Entrepreneurs

Founders or partners of a UAE startup with minimum AED 500,000 project value, or a tech startup approved by the Ministry of Economy. Business must be operational.

Scientists & Researchers

Accredited researchers in science, technology, and engineering fields. Requires recommendation from the UAE Ministry of Cabinet Affairs or relevant authority.

Distinguished Students

UAE high school or university graduates with a GPA of 3.8 or above. Top-50 world university graduates (QS rankings). Applications within 2 years of graduation.

Doctors & Specialists

Licensed doctors and specialists practising in the UAE in shortage specialties. Recommendation from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) required.

Creative Talents

Artists, athletes, cultural figures, and authors recognised for contributions in their field. Requires endorsement from relevant UAE federal or emirate-level ministry.

Humanitarian Pioneers

Individuals recognised for outstanding contributions to social, humanitarian, or volunteer work in the UAE or abroad. Nominated through official channels.

Frontline Heroes

Medical and support personnel who served during national crises (e.g. COVID-19 pandemic). Awarded by the UAE government on nomination basis.

Golden Visa Application Process

  1. 1Determine your qualifying category (property, salary, talent, etc.)
  2. 2Gather documents: passport, proof of qualifying asset/salary, Emirates ID, photos
  3. 3Apply via the ICP website (icp.gov.ae), GDRFA Dubai app, or an authorised typing centre
  4. 4Pay government fees (AED 2,800–5,000 depending on category and duration)
  5. 5Complete medical fitness test and biometrics at an ICP-approved centre
  6. 6Emirates ID issued within 5–7 working days after biometrics
  7. 7Residency visa stamped in passport — valid for 5 or 10 years

Emirates ID

The Emirates ID (EID) is mandatory for every UAE resident — expats, citizens, and dependants alike. It functions as the primary national identity document and is required for virtually every government and private sector transaction in the country.

What It Is

A smart card with a chip containing your biometric data (fingerprints, photo, personal details). Issued by the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security).

Processing Time

Typically 5–7 working days after biometrics are submitted. You can track your card status via the ICP app ("UAE Pass" / "ICP UAE" app) or by calling 600-522-222.

Cost

AED 270 for a 2-year Emirates ID. AED 370 for a 3-year Emirates ID. AED 470 for a 5-year Emirates ID. The validity matches your residency permit duration.

Why You Need It

Required to open a bank account, register a vehicle, sign a tenancy contract (Ejari), obtain health insurance, access government services, and travel within the GCC.

Emirates ID Tip: Apply Immediately

Once you receive your entry permit or residence visa stamp, apply for your Emirates ID right away. You can apply via the ICP app, the ICP website, or any Amer Centre in Dubai. Carry a printout of your application receipt — it acts as a temporary ID while the card is being processed. Many services (banking, phone plan upgrades) will accept the application reference number.

Medical Fitness Test

Every resident visa applicant must pass a medical fitness test. This is a mandatory government requirement — no exceptions. The test screens for specific communicable diseases and ensures you receive the correct health clearance to live and work in the UAE.

What the Test Includes

  • Blood test — screens for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis
  • Chest X-ray — screens for active tuberculosis
  • Leprosy screening (physical examination)
  • Results sent digitally to the immigration system
  • No preparation required (fasting not necessary)

Where to Get Tested

  • DHA-approved medical fitness centres across Dubai
  • Major hospitals: Dubai Hospital, Al Baraha Hospital
  • Private centres: Mediclinic, NMC, Aster, Medeor
  • Cost: AED 250–350 (varies by centre)
  • Results within 24–48 hours in most centres

Medical Test — Critical Notes

  • If you test positive for HIV, Hepatitis B/C, or active TB, your residency application will be rejected and you will be deported. There is no appeal process for communicable disease cases.
  • Pregnant women should inform the doctor — X-rays may be modified or deferred.
  • The test result is valid for 3 months. If your visa processing takes longer, you may need to re-test.
  • Book at a DHA-approved centre only — results from non-approved clinics are not accepted.

Visa Runs

A "visa run" is the practice of leaving and re-entering the UAE to reset a tourist visa or extend your permitted stay. For many years this was commonplace, but the UAE has introduced tighter restrictions since 2023 and authorities are increasingly scrutinising frequent short exits.

Oman (Khatm Al Shakla)

Approx. cost: AED 200–400

Most common destination. The Hatta border crossing is the closest from Dubai (~1.5 hours drive). Day trip possible. Bring your passport and UAE entry stamp. Return stamp usually issued same day.

Bahrain / Kuwait

Approx. cost: AED 300–500 (flight)

Short flights from Dubai. Some travellers combine a visa run with a weekend trip. GCC entry is straightforward for most nationalities. Return entry to UAE resets your 30-day stamp.

Georgia / Uzbekistan

Approx. cost: AED 700–1,200 (flight)

Popular among long-term visa runners needing a 'real' trip. Both countries offer visa-free access. Flights are affordable from Dubai. Good for resetting 90-day or multi-entry visas.

Visa Run Restrictions — Read This First

  • Immigration officers can deny entry to travellers who exit and re-enter too frequently on tourist visas. There is no fixed rule on how many runs are allowed, but 3–4 runs in quick succession is a red flag.
  • The UAE now uses a points-based system — frequent short-exit patterns are tracked and may trigger a ban or forced deportation.
  • If you intend to live in Dubai long-term, get a proper residency visa rather than relying on visa runs. The Green Visa and Freelance Visa were designed precisely to address this.
  • Each re-entry on a tourist stamp costs AED 50 per day of overstay if you miscalculate your exit date.

Overstay Penalties

Overstaying your visa in the UAE is a serious offence with automatic daily fines, potential travel bans, and in extreme cases, deportation. The system is fully automated — fines accrue from the first day of overstay.

Overstay Fine Schedule

Visa TypeDaily FineAdditional Penalties
Tourist / Visit VisaAED 100 per dayTravel ban after prolonged overstay; fines must be paid before departure
Residence Visa (expired)AED 125 per dayCannot renew or transfer visa while fines are outstanding
Entry permit (expired)AED 100 per dayDeportation if left unpaid; compulsory exit with no return entry
Grace period after job loss0 (6-month grace)Resident whose employer cancels visa has 6 months to find work or depart

How to Check Your Visa Status

  • Download the ICP UAE app (iOS / Android) — check entry/exit history and visa expiry in real time.
  • Visit icp.gov.ae and use the visa status check tool with your passport number.
  • Call GDRFA Dubai on 8005111 for visa status queries.
  • At the airport, an immigration officer can tell you your exact visa expiry before you depart.

Visa Cancellation

When leaving a job or changing status in the UAE, your residency visa must be formally cancelled. This is a legal requirement and cannot be skipped, even if you plan to return on a tourist visa.

30-Day Grace Period

After visa cancellation (by employer or yourself), you have 30 days to either leave the UAE, obtain a new residence visa, or convert to a visit visa. This grace period is provided automatically — you do not need to apply for it.

Final Salary Settlement

Your employer must pay your final salary, end-of-service gratuity (if applicable), and any outstanding expenses before cancellation. MOHRE can intervene if there is a dispute. Free zone employees follow their free zone's labour rules.

Convert to Tourist Visa

You can convert your cancelled residency to a 30-day tourist visa in-country. Apply at any Amer Centre or via the GDRFA app. Cost is approximately AED 200. This gives you time to sort affairs before departing.

NOC and Documents

Your employer should provide a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to transfer to another employer. Ensure your Emirates ID and visa are formally cancelled before applying elsewhere — two active residencies are not permitted.

Self-Cancellation Option

If your employer refuses to cancel your visa, you can self-cancel at a GDRFA or ICP service centre. Bring your passport, Emirates ID, and a written notice of your resignation or contract termination. This typically takes 1–2 working days. A AED 200 service fee may apply. Self-cancellation is especially important if you intend to apply for a new visa type (e.g. Golden Visa or Green Visa).

Document Attestation

The UAE requires many foreign documents — especially educational certificates and marriage certificates — to be formally attested (legalised) before they are accepted by UAE authorities. This is a multi-step process that can take weeks if not planned in advance.

Document TypeRequired ForAttestation PathApprox. Cost
Educational CertificatesEmployment visa, Golden Visa (salary route), Investor VisaHome country authority → UAE Embassy in that country → UAE MOFAAED 150–200 (MOFA fee) + home country fees
Marriage CertificateFamily / Dependent Visa (spouse)Home country registrar → UAE Embassy → MOFA DubaiAED 150–200 (MOFA) + home country fees
Birth CertificateFamily / Dependent Visa (children)Home country authority → UAE Embassy → MOFAAED 150–200 (MOFA) + home country fees
Police Clearance CertificateSome employment visas, investor categoriesHome country police authority → UAE Embassy apostilleVaries by country (AED 50–200)
Power of AttorneyProperty transactions, legal mattersUAE notary public; or home country notary → UAE Embassy → MOFAAED 200–500 depending on type

Apostille vs. Full Attestation

Countries that have signed the Hague Apostille Convention (UK, USA, Australia, most of Europe) only need an apostille stamp — no need to visit the UAE Embassy. Countries NOT in the Convention (India, Pakistan, Philippines, many African nations) require the full multi-step legalisation process through the UAE Embassy in that country. Plan 4–8 weeks for full attestation from non-Apostille countries. UAE MOFA attestation itself takes 2–3 working days and costs AED 150–200 per document.

Top 5 Tips for a Smooth Visa Process in Dubai

  1. Get your documents attested before you arrive — it is much harder and slower to do it from inside the UAE.
  2. Apply for Emirates ID the same day as your medical test — many typing centres allow you to do both in one visit.
  3. Keep all receipts and application numbers — UAE government systems sometimes lose applications and you will need proof of submission.
  4. Download the ICP UAE and GDRFA Dubai apps — track your visa status, Emirates ID printing, and entry/exit history 24/7.
  5. If your employer is slow to process your visa, follow up with MOHRE (80060) — there are legal timeframes employers must meet, and MOHRE can intervene.

Always Verify Current Rules

UAE visa regulations change frequently — fees, required documents, and eligibility criteria are updated without much public notice. The information on this page reflects rules as of early 2025. Always double-check with the ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA (gdrfad.gov.ae) before submitting an application or booking travel. For complex cases, consult a licensed UAE immigration lawyer or PRO (Public Relations Officer) service.
