Nightlife in Dubai

Complete guide to Dubai's nightlife scene — bars, clubs, rooftop lounges, ladies' nights, live music, shisha, alcohol rules, and getting home safely.

Dubai has one of the most dynamic nightlife scenes in the world — rooftop bars with Burj Khalifa views, international superclubs hosting globally recognised DJs, beach bars, intimate jazz spots, and world-class restaurant bars. It operates within an Islamic legal framework (alcohol only in licensed venues, drinking age 21) but the variety and quality rival any global city. Here's everything you need to know.

Alcohol Laws — Read Before You Go Out

Alcohol is only legal in licensed venues (hotels, specific clubs, and licensed restaurants). It is illegal to drink in public, on the beach, in parks, or in unlicensed establishments. The legal drinking age is 21. Being visibly intoxicated in public is illegal and can result in arrest. Never drink and drive — zero tolerance, any detectable alcohol = criminal offence.

Shisha Lounges

Dress Code Guide

Casual Bars & Beach Bars

Smart casual minimum. Clean, neat clothing. Shorts acceptable. No torn clothing. Flip-flops usually fine at beach bars like Barasti.

DIFC & Hotel Bars

Smart casual to smart. Collared shirts for men. No shorts. Women: dress or smart trousers. Open-toe shoes fine. Trainers: depends on venue.

Clubs & Superclubs

Smart to formal. Men: dress trousers, dress shoes, collared shirt or blazer. Women: dress or upscale outfit. Trainers, shorts, flip-flops = refused entry.

Getting Home Safely

SafeDriver

Unique Dubai service — a professional driver comes to you, drives YOU home in YOUR own car. Your car stays at home, not on the street. Costs AED 100–150. Book via SafeDriver app or call. Essential for those who drove to the venue.

Best option if you drove

Careem & Uber

Both operate 24/7 in Dubai. Expect significant surge pricing Thursday–Saturday nights (2x–4x base fare at 1–3am). Using both apps and taking the cheaper option is common practice. Pools of taxis available at most major venues.

Best for: those without a car

Dubai Taxis

Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) cabs are metered and reliable. Taxi ranks at Dubai Mall, JBR Walk, Souk Madinat, and outside most major clubs. Call 04-208-0000 to book. No surge pricing — fare is always metered.

Best for: predictable pricing

Metro (Limited)

Dubai Metro runs until 12:30am Sunday–Wednesday, 1am Thursday, and 2am Friday–Saturday. Good for getting to a venue before midnight; limited use for late nights. Metro operates on honour system but inspectors do check.

Best for: early evenings

Dry Days — Islamic Holidays

On certain Islamic public holidays, alcohol sales are prohibited across all licensed venues in Dubai for 24 hours (typically midnight to midnight). These dates are usually announced 1–3 days in advance. Bars and clubs either close or serve non-alcoholic alternatives. Exact dates change each year as they follow the Islamic lunar calendar.

OccasionDuration of No Alcohol Sales
Eid Al Fitr2–3 days (eve + Eid days)
Eid Al Adha2–3 days (eve + Eid days)
Prophet Muhammad's Birthday1 day
Islamic New Year1 day
Lailat Al Mi'raj (Prophet's Ascension)1 day

Plan Around Dry Days

During Ramadan, bars and clubs operate but typically do not serve alcohol until after sunset (Iftar time). The atmosphere during Ramadan is genuinely unique and respectful — late nights come alive after 10pm with shisha and food. Major nightlife events are not held during the holy month.

Practical Tips

  • Peak nightlife is Thursday and Friday nights (the UAE weekend). Saturday is busy; Sunday–Wednesday are significantly quieter.
  • Most clubs and bars don't fill up until 11pm–midnight. Arriving at 9pm gets you in without a queue but you'll be in an empty venue.
  • Table reservations are near-mandatory at top clubs and rooftop bars — book 3–7 days ahead.
  • Happy hours are widely offered, typically 5–8pm. DIFC and Marina have the best concentration.
  • The Entertainer app (AED 595/year) has 2-for-1 drink deals at hundreds of venues — it pays for itself in 3 nights out.
  • Water is expensive in licensed venues (AED 25–40/bottle) — hydrate before you go out.
  • Most venues are cashless or strongly prefer card; carry a card, not large amounts of cash.
  • Photography inside clubs: check the venue's policy. Many restrict phones on the dance floor for privacy reasons.
