Abra

Transport

Traditional wooden motorboat used to cross Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. Costs AED 1 per person. One of Dubai's oldest and most atmospheric transport modes.

AED

Finance

UAE Dirham — the official currency of the United Arab Emirates. Pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 3.6725 AED per 1 USD. Abbreviated as Dhs or AED.

Amer

Government

A network of service centres operated by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) for visa and immigration services in Dubai. Found in malls and dedicated centres.

DEWA

Government

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority — the government utility provider for electricity and water in Dubai. New residents must register and pay a refundable deposit (AED 2,000 for apartments, AED 4,000 for villas).

DET

Government

Department of Economy and Tourism — formerly DTCM and DED combined. Oversees Dubai's tourism promotion and business licensing.

DIFC

General

Dubai International Financial Centre — a financial free zone with its own civil and commercial laws based on English common law. Home to major banks, law firms, and financial institutions. Has its own courts system.

DLD

Property

Dubai Land Department — the government authority responsible for all real estate transactions in Dubai. Registers property sales, manages Ejari, and oversees RERA.

DSF

General

Dubai Shopping Festival — annual 6-week retail event typically running January to February. Features discounts of up to 75%, daily raffles, fireworks, and live entertainment across the city.

DTCM

Government

Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing — former name of Dubai's tourism body, now merged into DET. You may still see this abbreviation in older documents.

DXB

Transport

IATA airport code for Dubai International Airport — the world's busiest international airport by passenger numbers. Terminal 1 (Emirates, Qantas), Terminal 2 (budget carriers), Terminal 3 (Emirates hub).

Ejari

Property

Arabic for 'my rent.' The official government tenancy contract registration system managed by the DLD/RERA. All rental contracts must be registered through Ejari. Required for visa renewal, DEWA connection, and school enrollment.

Emirates ID

Government

The national identity card issued by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) to UAE citizens and residents. Mandatory to carry at all times. Required for almost every government and banking transaction.

Freehold

Property

Designated areas in Dubai where foreign nationals can own property outright with no time limit. Includes areas like Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, JBR, and Jumeirah Village Circle.

Free Zone

Government

Special economic zones where businesses can be 100% foreign-owned (vs. the mainland requirement for local sponsorship in some sectors). Dubai has 30+ free zones including DIFC, JAFZA, Dubai Media City, and Dubai Internet City.

GDRFA

Government

General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs — the immigration authority in Dubai responsible for visas, residency permits, and entry/exit. Operates Amer centres and the GDRFA Dubai app.

Golden Visa

Government

Long-term UAE residency visa valid for 5 or 10 years, granted to investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, scientists, and outstanding students. Eliminates need for a local sponsor.

Gratuity

Finance

End-of-service benefit payable to employees under UAE labour law. Calculated as 21 days of basic salary per year for the first 5 years, and 30 days per year thereafter. Payable upon termination or resignation.

ICP

Government

Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security — the federal body managing Emirates ID and citizenship. Previously called ICA. The ICP app handles ID renewal and status checks.

Iftar

Culture

The meal Muslims eat to break their fast at sunset during Ramadan. Hotels and restaurants across Dubai host elaborate Iftar tents and buffets. Non-Muslims are welcome to join.

JBR

General

Jumeirah Beach Residence — a beachfront residential, hotel, and retail district in Dubai Marina. The Walk at JBR is a popular outdoor promenade. The Beach at JBR is a free public beach.

JLT

General

Jumeirah Lakes Towers — a free zone and residential district opposite Dubai Marina. Popular with SMEs and professionals. Built around four artificial lakes with a park running between the towers.

JVC

General

Jumeirah Village Circle — a master-planned residential community in new Dubai. Popular with budget-conscious renters and families. Good value compared to Marina and Downtown.

Kandura

Culture

The traditional white ankle-length robe worn by Emirati men. Also called thobe or dishdasha in other Gulf countries. The white colour reflects heat; darker colours are worn in winter.

KHDA

Government

Knowledge and Human Development Authority — the government body overseeing private education in Dubai. Conducts annual school inspections and publishes ratings (Outstanding, Good, Acceptable, Weak).

Makani

General

Arabic for 'my location.' Dubai's grid-based address system assigning a unique 10-digit number to every building entrance. Used in the Dubai Maps app. Essential when your building has no formal street address.

MOHRE

Government

Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation — the federal authority overseeing labour relations in the UAE. Handles work permits, labour complaints, WPS registration, and Emiratisation quotas for businesses.

MOFA

Government

Ministry of Foreign Affairs — responsible for UAE diplomatic relations and attestation of documents for use abroad. Document attestation through MOFA is a common requirement for expats.

NOC

General

No Objection Certificate — a letter from an authority (employer, landlord, bank, developer) confirming no objection to a particular action. Common in property transactions, job changes, and visa processes.

nol Card

Transport

Rechargeable smart card used across Dubai's public transport system — Metro, bus, tram, water bus, and some taxis. Available in Red (tourist), Silver (resident), Gold (premium), and Blue (special needs) tiers.

Oqood

Property

The off-plan property registration system in Dubai, managed by the DLD. When you buy a property under construction from a developer, the sales contract is registered through Oqood.

PRO

Government

Public Relations Officer — a person or company that handles government paperwork on behalf of businesses or individuals. Essential for companies dealing with licensing, visa processing, and government permits.

RERA

Property

Real Estate Regulatory Agency — the regulatory arm of DLD that governs Dubai's property sector. Sets rules for landlords, tenants, and real estate agents. The RERA Rental Index determines allowable rent increases.

RTA

Transport

Roads and Transport Authority — Dubai's transportation planning and management body. Operates the Dubai Metro, buses, water transport, and manages road licensing and Salik toll system.

Salik

Transport

Dubai's automated road toll system. RFID tag mounted on vehicle windscreen. AED 6 per gate crossing. Currently 8 gates across major roads including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Garhoud Bridge, and Al Maktoum Bridge.

Shamal

Culture

A strong, dry, northwesterly wind that blows across the UAE, often carrying sand and dust. Can cause sandstorms that reduce visibility significantly. Typically occurs in June–July and January–February.

Sheikh Zayed Road

Transport

Dubai's main arterial highway (E11) running from Abu Dhabi through central Dubai to Sharjah. Lined with iconic skyscrapers including the Emirates Towers. Also carries Salik tolls.

Shisha

Culture

Water pipe used for smoking flavoured tobacco, also called hookah. A popular social activity in Dubai — shisha cafes (shisha bars) are found everywhere from rooftop lounges to beachside spots. Costs AED 30–80.

Souk

Culture

Traditional Arabic market. Dubai's famous souks include the Gold Souk (Deira), Spice Souk (Deira), and Textile Souk (Bur Dubai). Bargaining is expected and part of the experience.

Suhoor

Culture

The pre-dawn meal eaten by Muslims before fasting begins each day during Ramadan. Hotels and restaurants serve suhoor from midnight until before Fajr prayer. Atmospheric communal dining experience.

Tadbeer

Government

A government-regulated network of domestic worker recruitment and placement centres in Dubai. Provides domestic helpers (maids, nannies, drivers) with government-backed guarantees and standardised contracts.

Tasheel

Government

Service centres that help businesses and individuals submit applications to MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources). Found across Dubai — handle work permits, labour contract attestations, and Emiratisation compliance.

UAE Pass

Government

The national digital identity platform of the UAE. A single sign-on solution for accessing government services digitally. Allows document signing, identity verification, and service requests without visiting government offices.

VARA

Government

Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority — Dubai's dedicated regulator for cryptocurrency and virtual asset businesses. Established in 2022. Companies dealing in crypto must be licensed by VARA to operate in Dubai.

Wasta

Culture

Informal influence or connections — the social currency of the Arab world. Having wasta means having access to influential contacts who can smooth processes, speed up approvals, or secure opportunities.

WPS

Finance

Wages Protection System — a UAE government system mandating that private sector employers pay salaries electronically through approved channels. Monitors timely salary payments and reports violations to MOHRE.
