Things to Do in Dubai

Dubai is one of the world's most diverse cities for things to see and do — from the surreal heights of the Burj Khalifa to camel rides in the endless desert. This comprehensive guide covers iconic landmarks, theme parks, desert adventures, beaches, culture, family activities, free attractions, and day trips.

Best Time to Visit for Activities

October to April is peak season — temperatures are 20–30°C and all outdoor activities are pleasant. May to September is brutally hot (40–48°C), so outdoor activities are limited to early morning or evening. Indoor attractions (malls, museums, waterparks) are great year-round. Some seasonal attractions like Global Village and Miracle Garden only operate October/November through April/May.

Iconic Landmarks

Burj Khalifa — At the Top

AED 169–399

The world's tallest building at 828m. Observation decks on floors 124, 125, and 148 offer jaw-dropping 360° views over Dubai's skyline, Palm Jumeirah, and the Arabian Desert. Floor 148 (At the Top SKY) is the highest outdoor observation deck on Earth.

Tip: Book online 2–3 days in advance for the lowest prices — on-site tickets cost significantly more and may not be available.

Dubai Frame

AED 50

A 150m tall picture frame in Zabeel Park straddling old and new Dubai — the historic Al Fahidi district on one side, the modern skyscraper skyline on the other. The glass-floored sky bridge connecting the two towers is unforgettable.

Tip: Visit late afternoon for the best light on both sides. It's one of Dubai's most underrated attractions given the low price.

Museum of the Future

AED 149

Opened in 2022, this torus-shaped building covered in Arabic calligraphy is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings on Earth. Inside, immersive exhibitions explore future technology, sustainability, and human potential across multiple themed floors.

Tip: Buy tickets weeks in advance — it sells out regularly, especially during school holidays and peak season.

Ain Dubai (Dubai Eye)

AED 130

The world's largest and tallest observation wheel at 250m on Bluewaters Island. Each air-conditioned cabin holds up to 40 passengers. The 38-minute ride delivers panoramic views of the Palm Jumeirah, JBR, and Dubai Marina skyline.

Tip: The evening ride after sunset is stunning when the city lights up. Dining cabins and private cabins are available for special occasions.

The View at The Palm

AED 100

The observation deck on the 52nd floor of the Palm Tower at the heart of Palm Jumeirah. The only place to see the entire Palm from above without being in a helicopter — you can clearly make out all 16 fronds and the crescent.

Tip: Go on a clear morning for the best visibility. Combine with a visit to Atlantis across the Palm or Aquaventure Waterpark.

Dubai Opera

from AED 200

A stunning dhow-shaped multi-format performing arts venue in Downtown Dubai hosting world-class opera, ballet, theatre, musicals, and concerts. The architecture itself — with its curved hull-shaped roof that opens fully for outdoor events — is worth seeing even without attending a show.

Tip: Check the schedule months in advance for international productions like Swan Lake, Phantom of the Opera, and international orchestras.

Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk

Free

Walk or cycle along the 11km boardwalk circling the outer crescent of Palm Jumeirah. Iconic views of the Atlantis hotel, Dubai Marina skyline, and Ain Dubai. A peaceful escape from the city with gentle sea breezes and waterfront cafes.

Tip: Best at sunrise or sunset. Bicycles can be rented nearby, or use the Careem bike share app to grab an e-bike.

Theme Parks & Attractions

Aquaventure Waterpark

AED 299

One of the world's best waterparks on the Palm Jumeirah at Atlantis. The Leap of Faith near-vertical slide, the Master Blaster uphill water coaster, a 1.6km lazy river, and access to a private beach make it a genuine full-day experience.

Tip: Use the Entertainer app for 2-for-1 entry. Avoid weekends and school holidays for shorter queues. Lockers and cabanas available.

IMG Worlds of Adventure

AED 299

The world's largest indoor theme park with four themed zones: Marvel (Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man rides), Cartoon Network, LOST Valley (dinosaurs), and Novo Cinemas. Fully air-conditioned — a great hot-weather option.

Tip: Book online for up to 20% discount. Go on weekday mornings to beat crowds. The Avengers Battle of Ultron ride is the highlight.

Motiongate Dubai

AED 245

Hollywood-themed park at Dubai Parks and Resorts featuring DreamWorks (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon), Sony Pictures (Ghostbusters, Hunger Games), and Lionsgate (Now You See Me) zones with thrilling rides and immersive attractions.

Tip: Multi-park passes covering Motiongate, Legoland, and Bollywood Parks offer great value if you plan to visit more than one park.

Legoland Dubai

AED 245

A 3 million LEGO brick park in Dubai Parks and Resorts with 40+ interactive rides and attractions across six themed lands. The LEGO-brick miniature cities of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and world landmarks are impressive. Best for families with kids aged 2–12.

Tip: Arrive at opening time to get maximum rides in before crowds build. A Legoland Hotel is on-site for themed overnight stays.

Wild Wadi Waterpark

AED 249

A classic Dubai waterpark next to the Burj Al Arab with 30 rides and attractions themed around an Arabian adventure story. The Jumeirah Sceirah — one of the tallest and fastest slides outside North America — is the signature thrill ride.

Tip: The Burj Al Arab backdrop makes for incredible photos. Check their website for seasonal promotions and evening "Wadi After Dark" events.

Ski Dubai

AED 210–260

Real snow inside Mall of the Emirates — 22,500 sqm of permanent snow in the desert. Five ski runs including a 400m black diamond, a toboggan run, snow park with snowball areas, and the iconic resident penguin colony you can interact with.

Tip: Jacket, ski pants, gloves, and boots are all included in the pass price. Bring thermal underlayers in winter when the mall approach feels especially cold.

Global Village

AED 25 (Oct–Apr)

Seasonal outdoor cultural park running October through April with pavilions from 90+ countries selling food, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Carnival rides, cultural performances, fireworks, and nightly entertainment spread across a massive site.

Tip: Go on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds. Each country's pavilion sells its own authentic food — the Indian, Thai, and Moroccan stalls are particularly popular.

Dubai Miracle Garden

AED 55 (Nov–May)

The world's largest natural flower garden with over 150 million blooming flowers arranged in spectacular sculptures — including a full-size Emirates A380 aircraft covered in flowers. The garden opens November through May each year.

Tip: Visit early morning on weekdays for the best experience and photos. Combine with nearby Butterfly Garden (AED 55 extra) in the same complex.

Garden Glow

AED 65

A nighttime light garden in Zabeel Park with giant glowing sculptures, a Dinosaur Park zone, and ice park. The millions of LED lights create a magical atmosphere after dark. Typically runs October through May with new themes each year.

Tip: Best visited after dark when the illuminations are at their most impressive. Combine with the Dubai Frame in the same Zabeel Park complex.

Desert Experiences

Morning Desert Safari

AED 150–200

A shorter desert excursion focusing on dune bashing in 4WDs, sandboarding, and camel riding in the early morning coolness. No dinner show, but a more authentic encounter with the desert landscape before the day heats up.

Tip: Morning safaris run October through April only when temperatures are manageable. The light at sunrise on the red dunes is spectacular for photography.

Evening BBQ Desert Safari

Quad Biking in the Dunes

AED 200–400

Ride powerful ATVs across the red sand dunes around Lahbab (about 45 minutes from Dubai). Options range from guided tours for beginners to freestyle sessions for experienced riders. A high-energy way to experience the desert landscape.

Al Mamzar Beach Park

AED 5

A spacious park in Deira with four separate beach areas, lawns, BBQ areas, a children's pool, and chalets for hire. Less crowded than the Marina beaches and popular with families. Views across the Creek to Sharjah.

Black Palace Beach

Free

A hidden public beach near the Al Sufouh Road offering unobstructed views of the Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina skyline. No facilities, but the peaceful atmosphere and stunning backdrop make it a favourite for early morning walks and photography.

The world's deepest pool at 60.02m in Nad Al Sheba, with an underwater city set built inside. Freediving, scuba diving, and technical diving courses and guided dives in a unique controlled environment. Featured in global media since its 2021 opening.

Tip: Requires advance booking. Non-divers can watch through underwater observation windows. A unique experience even for experienced divers.

AED 250–500

Rent a jet ski from JBR Beach, Dubai Marina, or Jumeirah Beach and race across the Gulf with the Dubai skyline as your backdrop. Most operators offer 30 to 60-minute guided tours along the coastline past iconic landmarks.

Tip: Book through the beach-based operators for the best rates. Morning slots have calmer water. Life jackets are mandatory and provided.

Parasailing

AED 300–400

Flyboarding

AED 300–500

Strap water-powered jets to your feet and launch 10 metres into the air above the sea. Instructors guide you through the basics and within 20–30 minutes most beginners can hover and manoeuvre. Operates from JBR, Jumeirah, and the Marina.

Tip: No experience needed — the instructors are very patient. Expect to get very wet. Sessions typically run 30–60 minutes.

Scuba Diving

AED 350–700

Explore artificial reefs around the Palm Jumeirah, the SS Dara WWII-era wreck, and the Mercury 2 wreck teeming with marine life. The Dubai Mall Aquarium also offers shark and ray diving experiences inside the tank.

Culture & Heritage

Dubai Museum

AED 3

The main repository of Dubai's history located in the Al Fahidi Fort — the city's oldest surviving building, built in 1787. Exhibits trace Dubai's transformation from a small fishing and pearl diving village to a global metropolis in just 50 years.

Tip: At AED 3, this is exceptional value. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Combine with a walk through the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood directly adjacent.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Free

Tip: Essential context for understanding modern Dubai and the UAE. The architecture — shaped like an unfurling document — is itself remarkable.

Coffee Museum, Al Fahidi

Free

A fascinating small museum dedicated to the history and culture of coffee, from its origins in Ethiopia through its journey along ancient trade routes to the Arab world. Vintage equipment, global coffee artefacts, and of course — excellent coffee to taste.

Tip: Try the traditional Arabic qahwa (cardamom-spiced coffee) and dates. The museum is inside a beautifully restored wind-tower house in Al Fahidi.

Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz

Free

Dubai's leading contemporary arts district in a converted industrial zone with 60+ galleries, creative studios, independent cinemas, and cutting-edge cafes and restaurants. The cultural heart of Dubai's arts scene with rotating exhibitions and events year-round.

One of Dubai's most photographed landmarks and one of the few mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslim visitors. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding runs guided "Open Doors, Open Minds" tours Saturday through Thursday at 10am with Q&A sessions over breakfast.

Tip: Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). The guided tour is a genuine and enriching cultural exchange. Tours are free but donations welcomed.

Jameel Arts Centre

Free

A stunning contemporary art museum on the Jaddaf Waterfront presenting major international exhibitions focused on artists from the Middle East, North Africa, South and Southeast Asia. The architecture and waterfront setting are worth the visit alone.

Tip: Closed Mondays. The library, reading room, and waterfront restaurant make it a great half-day destination. Free admission to all exhibitions.

Compare the included attractions carefully against your planned itinerary before buying — not all attractions are included.

Family-Friendly Activities

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

AED 135

One of the world's largest suspended aquariums inside Dubai Mall, home to over 33,000 aquatic animals including one of the largest collections of sand tiger sharks. The tunnel walk-through and cage snorkelling/diving add-ons make it a multi-hour experience.

Day Trips from Dubai

Abu Dhabi

1.5 hr drive

The UAE capital offers the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (the world's third largest, free entry), Louvre Abu Dhabi, Yas Island theme parks (Ferrari World, Warner Bros.), and the beautiful Corniche waterfront. Noticeably more relaxed pace than Dubai.

Tip: Rent a car or join an organised day tour. The ITHRAA bus runs from Al Ghubaiba station for AED 25 each way. Full day needed to do it justice.

Hatta Mountain Reserve

1.5 hr drive

Escape the city to the Hajar Mountains for kayaking on the turquoise Hatta Dam, mountain biking, zip-lining, and the Hatta Heritage Village. Completely different landscape and atmosphere from Dubai. Popular glamping destination with dome tents.

Tip: Best October through March. The RTA Hatta Bus from Union Metro is AED 25 return. The dam kayaking at sunrise or sunset is unforgettable.

Sharjah

30 min drive

The UAE's cultural capital next door to Dubai with an impressive collection of Islamic art museums, the Sharjah Heritage Area, the outstanding Sharjah Art Museum, the Sharjah Aquarium, and the atmospheric Souq Al Arsa. No alcohol sold anywhere in the emirate.

Tip: Most Sharjah museums charge AED 15–50. Dress conservatively. Rush hour border traffic between Dubai and Sharjah can add 30–60 minutes each way — avoid peak hours.

Ras Al Khaimah

1 hr drive

The northernmost emirate offers the UAE's highest mountains (Jebel Jais, 1,934m), the world's longest zipline (Jebel Jais Flight), Dhayah Fort, and beautiful desert and mangrove landscapes. A growing luxury resort destination with more affordable prices than Dubai.

Tip: The Jebel Jais zipline (AED 799) is a bucket-list UAE experience. The mountain road to the top is a spectacular drive even without doing the zipline.

Fujairah & East Coast

1.5 hr drive

The Indian Ocean coast is dramatically different from the Gulf side — rocky mountains meeting clear blue water. Snoopy Island is one of the UAE's best snorkelling spots, Fujairah Fort is the oldest fort in the UAE, and Al Bidyah Mosque dates back to 1446 AD.

Tip: Best as a weekend trip. Stay at one of the beachfront hotels for diving and snorkelling packages. The mountain road through Masafi passes colourful Friday fruit and pottery markets.

Al Ain — Garden City

1.5 hr drive

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the UAE's only inland city with ancient falaj irrigation systems, Al Ain Palace Museum, Jahili Fort, the Al Ain Zoo (one of the region's best), Jebel Hafeet mountain, and the atmospherically lit mountain road at night.

Tip: The oasis and falaj system is free to walk through. Drive to the top of Jebel Hafeet (1,249m) at sunset for one of the UAE's most scenic views.
