Higher Education in the UAE
The UAE has transformed its higher education landscape dramatically since 2000. The country now hosts over 60 universities, including more than 40 international branch campuses from the UK, US, Australia, France, and other leading education nations. This makes the UAE — and Dubai in particular — one of the world's densest concentrations of international university campuses.
Students in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can choose between: a full internationally-recognised degree from a branch campus (University of Birmingham Dubai, Heriot-Watt, Middlesex, Murdoch, Wollongong), a UAE-accredited American-model university (AUS, AUD), a UAE national institution (UAEU in Al Ain, Zayed University), or the country's most selective research institution (Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi) and one of the world's top-ranked liberal arts universities (NYU Abu Dhabi).
Fees range from AED 50,000–110,000/year for tuition. With the UAE tax-free salary environment, many expat families can fund their children's UAE university education from local income — saving the cost and upheaval of sending children abroad.

Top UAE Universities — Overview
The following institutions are the most respected in the UAE as of 2026, by a combination of international rankings, accreditation, and graduate employment outcomes:
NYU Abu Dhabi
Consistently ranked in the world's top 50 universities (QS and Times Higher Education). A genuinely global liberal arts and sciences university — not a branch campus but a co-equal portal campus to NYU New York. Highly selective (4–10% acceptance rate). The defining feature: a comprehensive financial aid programme that meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students. For academically exceptional students from any income background, NYUAD may cost nothing. Students from 115+ nationalities on one campus.
Khalifa University of Science and Technology (Abu Dhabi)

Merit scholarships cover 50–100% of tuition for high-achieving students. ABET-accredited engineering programmes. Primarily an engineering and applied sciences institution — limited arts and business offerings.
American University of Sharjah (AUS)
The UAE's most established independent American-model university, founded 1997. Strong reputation across the GCC for engineering, architecture, business, and sciences. AACSB-accredited business school, ABET-accredited engineering. AED 70,000–95,000/year. Sheikh Sultan Scholarship provides full-tuition coverage for the highest-achieving applicants. 8-Step UAE University Application Guide
Applications for September intake should begin no later than January–February for selective institutions. The steps below apply broadly across UAE universities — verify specific requirements for each institution.
- 1
Research universities and select your shortlist
Start with the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education rankings, and UAE-specific CAA (Commission for Academic Accreditation) lists. For each university on your shortlist, verify: accreditation status (national CAA + the home country accreditor if a branch campus), specific programme accreditation (AACSB for business, ABET for engineering, etc.), graduate employment outcomes, and whether the degree is recognised in your home country. Shortlist 4–6 universities with a range of selectivity.Time: 4–8 weeks of research - 2
Prepare standardised test scores
Most UAE universities require either: SAT (minimum 1100–1400+ for selective institutions) or A-Levels (minimum BBC–AAB depending on programme) or IB Diploma (28–36+ points). Engineering and STEM programmes at Khalifa and NYUAD require strong maths and science scores. TOEFL (minimum 80 iBT) or IELTS (minimum 6.0–6.5) are required for non-native English speakers. SAT and TOEFL/IELTS must be valid at time of application — check expiry dates. Some universities accept EmSAT (UAE national test) for UAE-educated applicants.Time: Scores valid 2 years — plan accordingly - 3
Gather required documents
Standard UAE university application documents: certified school transcripts (all secondary years), predicted or final A-Level/IB/SAT scores, TOEFL or IELTS score report, passport copy, school reference letters (typically 2), personal statement or statement of purpose (500–1,000 words), UAE residence visa copy (if already in UAE), and portfolio (for architecture, design, or arts programmes). International students: verified/attested transcripts may be required from home country authorities.Time: 4–6 weeks to compile - 4
Apply and request scholarships
Apply online through each university's admissions portal. Most UAE universities open applications for September intake between November and April — check each institution's specific deadlines. Apply to scholarships at the same time as your admission application — most merit scholarships are automatically considered from your application; some require a separate essay. Early application (by January for September intake) maximises scholarship chances.Time: Apply November–April for September intake - 5
Attend interview or assessment (if required)
Selective universities — NYUAD (highly selective, worldwide top 50), Khalifa University, AUS — may require an admission interview, entrance exam, or assessment day. NYUAD's admissions process is among the most holistic and competitive in the region, similar to US liberal arts colleges. Prepare by: researching the university's distinctive programmes, practising articulating your academic and extracurricular achievements, and preparing questions that show genuine intellectual curiosity about the institution.Time: 1–3 hours; scheduled by university - 6
Receive offer and accept with deposit
Offers are typically conditional (pending final exam results) or unconditional. Conditional offers specify minimum grades required. Accept your preferred offer and pay the required enrolment deposit (AED 2,000–10,000, typically credited against first-year fees). Decline other offers promptly to free up places for waitlisted students. Check what documentation must be submitted post-acceptance (medical checks, visa issuance, orientation attendance).Cost: AED 2,000–10,000 depositTime: Within 2–4 weeks of offer - 7
Arrange student visa
UAE universities typically issue student visas for enrolled international students. The process: university sends visa approval to ICA (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security); student receives visa on arrival or at ICA centre; Emirates ID is issued. UAE student visa is valid for the programme duration and tied to the university as sponsor. International students cannot work without a No-Objection Certificate from the university. UAE national universities (UAEU, Zayed) may have different student visa rules.Cost: AED 500–1,500 visa feesTime: 2–6 weeks after enrolment confirmation - 8
Arrange accommodation and finances
Apply for on-campus accommodation immediately after accepting your offer — it is limited at most UAE institutions and allocated on a first-come basis. On-campus costs: AED 25,000–60,000/year (includes room and meal plan). Off-campus shared flat near campus: AED 30,000–50,000/year for a shared room in a shared apartment. Budget for full 4-year cost: tuition + living + books + personal expenses. NYUAD offers full financial aid to meet demonstrated need — its effective cost for many students is zero.Cost: AED 25,000–60,000/year accommodationTime: As soon as offer accepted
