The UAE has three main consumer options: Etisalat (rebranded as e& in 2022 — the original national carrier), du (challenger since 2007), and Virgin Mobile UAE (a du-network MVNO, 100% digital). All three offer 5G. Prices at equivalent tiers are broadly similar between Etisalat and du, with Virgin undercutting both on mobile-only no-contract plans but offering no home internet or roaming bundles.

Botim (TRA-approved VoIP)
Bundled on many Etisalat/du plans — legal VoIP alternative
AED 5–30/mo
Tip
For frequent India/Pakistan calls, du often wins at AED 175/mo tier — compare bundle inclusions before signing.
WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are blocked in the UAE
WhatsApp voice and video calls are blocked over consumer mobile and home internet connections in the UAE — an official TRA policy. FaceTime audio, Skype voice, and most consumer VoIP apps are similarly restricted. WhatsApp text messaging and media sharing work normally.
Legal alternatives: Botim, ToTok, and HiU Messenger are TRA-approved VoIP apps that work on UAE networks. Botim is the most widely used — costs AED 5–30/mo and is bundled on many Etisalat and du plans. Using a VPN to bypass the block is a legal grey area; the law prohibits VPN use for unlawful purposes, but individual enforcement is rare.
UAE Pass for digital SIM activation
UAE Pass is the official government digital identity app. Virgin Mobile requires UAE Pass for account creation. Etisalat and du support it for identity verification in their apps, enabling eSIM activation, SIM swaps, and plan changes without visiting a store. Verify your Emirates ID in UAE Pass before signing up for a plan digitally.
How to switch telecom provider — number portability
1
Choose your new provider and plan
Use the comparison tool above to decide between Etisalat, du, or Virgin Mobile. Compare at the same price tier — the difference at AED 175/mo in data, calling, and coverage can be significant. du is generally 5–10% cheaper at equivalent tiers; Etisalat wins on rural coverage and roaming.
Time: 1–2 days (research)
2
Request Mobile Number Portability (MNP) via TDRA
The UAE's number portability process is regulated by the TDRA. Initiate an MNP transfer from the new provider's store or app. You need your Emirates ID, passport, and current mobile number. The existing provider cannot block a valid MNP request but may offer retention deals.
Time: Same day (initiation)
3
Complete ID verification and receive new SIM
Provide Emirates ID and passport at the new provider's store or via app. Virgin Mobile is fully in-app via UAE Pass. Etisalat and du offer in-store or courier SIM delivery. eSIM transfers can be completed entirely digitally — most convenient.
Time: 1–2 hours at store; 1–3 days courier
4
Number transfer completes
The port typically completes within 24–48 hours of the MNP request. There will be a short window (usually 2–4 hours during a low-traffic time slot) where calls may briefly drop. After transfer, your number is live on the new network and your old SIM deactivates. Confirm the plan is active in your new provider's app.
Time: 24–48 hours
Setting up home internet in a new apartment
1
Obtain your Ejari (tenancy registration)
Both Etisalat and du require proof of tenancy before installing home internet. Ejari is the official Dubai tenancy registration certificate (RERA). Register via the Dubai REST app or at an Ejari typing centre (AED 200–220). Without Ejari, your broadband application will be declined — a common pitfall for new arrivals.
Cost: AED 200–220Time: 1–3 days
2
Apply for home internet online or in-store
Apply via the Etisalat or du website, app, or store. You'll need Emirates ID, passport, tenancy contract, and Ejari. Choose your speed tier and confirm fibre availability at your building — both providers have online postcode/building checkers. Older buildings in Deira and Bur Dubai may still need a DSL or 5G home router bridge while fibre is installed.
Time: 30 minutes (application)
3
Technician visit and installation
Both providers schedule a technician visit (1–3 hours) to install the fibre ONT unit and configure your router. Ensure an adult is home. Ask for the router admin password and your account credentials before the technician leaves. In buildings with centralised fibre infrastructure, installation may be faster.
Time: 3–7 days after application; 1–3 hours on site
4
Activate, test, and configure
After the technician visit, run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net. If speeds consistently fall below the contracted tier, log a fault in the first 30 days — covered by the service guarantee. A Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router upgrade significantly improves real-world performance on 500 Mbps+ plans, as the provided ISP router is often mid-range.
Time: Same day as technician visit
Postpaid vs prepaid
Postpaid advantages
More data per dirham — better value at equivalent price points
International calling bundles included on mid/upper plans
Roaming day/weekly passes at fixed predictable rates
eSIM and Apple Watch cellular supported
Can bundle with home internet for multi-line discounts
Postpaid drawbacks
Requires Emirates ID and UAE residence visa
12-month contract lock-in — early cancellation fees apply
Overage charges if you exceed data allowance
Must cancel in person before leaving UAE permanently
Prepaid / Virgin Mobile advantages
No contract — cancel or change at any time
Available to tourists and new arrivals before Emirates ID is issued
Virgin Mobile offers exceptional data value (100 GB at AED 175, unlimited AED 300)
No credit check or salary proof required
Fully digital sign-up — no store visit needed (Virgin via UAE Pass)
Prepaid / Virgin Mobile drawbacks
Roaming is expensive pay-as-you-go; Virgin Mobile has no roaming bundles at all
International calling not included — Botim subscription needed
No Apple Watch cellular on Virgin Mobile
Traditional prepaid (Wasel, du Prepaid) offers less data per dirham than Virgin or postpaid
Etisalat vs du for expats — pros and cons
Choose Etisalat by e& if…
You travel outside Dubai regularly — best rural, desert, and all-UAE coverage
Frequent international traveller — Smart Travel passes are superior for GCC and wider roaming
You want eLife TV with beIN Sports included in your bundle tier
You need reliable coverage from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah road trips
Established store network everywhere for in-person support
Etisalat drawbacks
Slightly higher entry prices than du at equivalent data tiers
Less competitive India / Pakistan per-minute calling rates vs du
Customer service wait times longer during peak hours
Choose du if…
You are a South Asian expat — du has the best India and Pakistan calling bundles
You want cheapest entry 5G postpaid (AED 99 vs AED 105)
Home internet is cheaper at every speed tier than Etisalat eLife
You want OSN Premium access bundled with home internet
du app consistently rated cleaner to use than Etisalat's
du drawbacks
Coverage noticeably weaker on road trips to northern Emirates, deserts, and rural areas
beIN Sports requires a paid add-on (AED 110–200/mo) on most plans
Fewer physical stores than Etisalat
Cancel your plan before leaving the UAE permanently
If you are leaving the UAE, you must cancel your telecom plans before your final exit. A cancelled Emirates ID does not automatically terminate your contract. For postpaid plans, visit the provider store at least 30 days before departure — both Etisalat and du require a notice period. Return rented equipment (router, set-top box). Early termination fees typically range from AED 500–2,000 depending on remaining months. Home internet contracts have the same cancellation rules.
