Full-service relocation company vs DIY
Full-service company
- Time-saving — company handles logistics, housing search, school applications, customs
- Access to corporate housing rates and preferred school contacts
- Dedicated single point of contact reduces stress dramatically
- Customs clearance handled — avoid fines and import delays
- Preview trips and virtual tours arranged in advance
- Children's settling-in support and school orientation
- Employer often contributes to cost — negotiate inclusion in package
DIY self-managed
- Premium cost: AED 30,000–150,000 additional spend
- Less control over specific vendors, housing areas, and school choices
- Quality varies widely — some agencies have limited Dubai local knowledge
- Incentive to up-sell premium services you may not need
Buy a car vs lease on arrival in Dubai
Buy a car (used)
- No ongoing monthly commitment — own your asset outright
- Used cars AED 30–60K provide reliable transport with low running costs
- No mileage restrictions or wear-and-tear charges at end of term
- Can sell when leaving UAE — residual value typically 60–75% after 3 years
- Insurance and maintenance fully in your control
- Better long-term value beyond 18 months of use
Lease a car
- Large upfront capital commitment (AED 30–300K)
- Depreciation risk — cars in UAE lose value quickly in first 2 years
- Full responsibility for unexpected maintenance costs
- Commitment not suitable if tenure in Dubai is uncertain
- Monthly leasing (AED 2–5K) is lower cash outflow if capital is tight on arrival
- Lease gives flexibility to switch cars every 12 months
Hidden costs: insurance, deposits, and VAT
Several costs surprise new arrivals: (1) Car insurance is mandatory and costs AED 2,000–6,000/year for a mid-range car — more for new arrivals without UAE claims history. (2) Housing deposits in Dubai are not just one month — leases typically require 1–4 post-dated cheques representing 3–12 months of rent. (3) 5% VAT applies to all services inside the UAE — add it to every service quote. (4) Courier and admin fees add up quickly during document attestation and visa processing — budget AED 2,000–5,000 in miscellaneous government and courier fees.
Cash flow: your first 6 months are critical
Many Dubai relocations fail due to cash flow, not income. Your first 3 months involve the highest spending (housing deposits, school fees, car purchase, furniture, utilities deposits) while salary may not arrive for 4–6 weeks. Maintain a minimum AED 100,000 liquid reserve for a couple, AED 250,000 for a family of 4. Do not arrive with less than 3 months of total expenses in accessible cash or foreign currency. UAE banks can take 5–10 days to open — have a Wise or Revolut card as a bridge.
Employer relocation packages are negotiable
Most employers understate what relocation packages typically include. Market standard for mid-to-senior roles: one-way flights for whole family, shipping allowance AED 20–60K, 30–60 day hotel or serviced apartment, housing allowance AED 80–200K/year, children's school allowance AED 40–100K/year per child, annual home leave tickets. Before signing, get the full package in writing — value can be AED 200–500K in year one alone. Once you arrive, leverage disappears.
