What Is the UAE Medical Fitness Test?
The UAE medical fitness test is a mandatory health screening requirement for all applicants for UAE residence visas. It is designed to screen for specific communicable diseases that, under UAE law, make an individual ineligible for a residence visa. The test is not a comprehensive health check — it targets specific conditions only.
The test is required for virtually all residence visa categories: employment visas (mainland and free zone), investor and partner visas, domestic worker visas, dependent visas for adults, and Golden Visa applications. Most visa applications begin with the medical fitness test, which must be completed before the Emirates ID application can be finalised.
What Tests Are Performed?
The UAE medical fitness test is a targeted screening panel. The exact tests depend on your visa category and emirate of application, but the standard package includes:

The medical fitness test does not screen for lifestyle conditions
The UAE medical fitness test does not test for: diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, obesity, mental health conditions, or most chronic diseases. It is specifically limited to communicable disease screening. Employers and the government cannot use the result to discriminate on health grounds beyond the specific tests listed above.

The Medical Fitness Test — 5-Step Process
- 1
Arrive at the DHA centre or approved partner
Go to a DHA medical fitness testing centre (Bur Dubai, Karama, Al Quoz, Al Nahda) or an approved partner such as Smart Salem at a mall. Arrive early — centres open from 07:30 and queues build quickly after 09:00. No appointment is needed at most DHA centres for standard service. Smart Salem and private clinics typically allow online bookings. - 2
Submit documents and pay the fee
At the registration desk, present: original passport (and copy), passport-size photo with white background, entry permit (page or printout), and any existing application form from your typing centre. Pay the fee at the cashier: AED 320 for standard (2–3 day result), AED 770 for express (24-hour result), or AED 1,500–3,000 for VIP same-day at approved centres. Keep your receipt — it contains your reference number for tracking results. - 3
Blood sample collection
A phlebotomist (blood draw nurse) takes a small blood sample — typically a finger prick or a small venous draw. The sample is tested for HIV (1 and 2), Hepatitis B (HBsAg), Hepatitis C (anti-HCV), Syphilis (some categories), and other markers depending on your visa category. The process takes under 5 minutes. Fasting is not required, though avoiding alcohol for 48 hours prior is advisable. - 4
Chest X-ray
You will be directed to the X-ray room for a standard posterior-anterior chest X-ray. The radiation dose is minimal — equivalent to approximately 3 days of background radiation. The X-ray screens for active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Results are read by a DHA-qualified radiologist. The X-ray takes under 2 minutes. Wear loose upper clothing to make the process easier. - 5
Receive your medical fitness result
Under standard processing, your result is available in 2–3 working days via the DHA website (dha.gov.ae → Medical Fitness) or via SMS to your registered number. Under express, results are typically available within 24 hours. A 'Fit' result means you can proceed with your Emirates ID and visa stamping. An 'Unfit' result means one or more tests returned a finding that requires follow-up — see the Unfit Result section below.

Abu Dhabi and other emirates have different fee structures
The fees above are for Dubai (DHA). Abu Dhabi medical fitness tests are administered by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) and DOH-approved centres — fees are similar but may differ slightly. In Sharjah and the northern emirates, MOH-run centres apply federal fee structures. Always confirm the current fee at the reception desk before paying.
DHA Centre vs Smart Salem vs Private Clinic — Pros and Cons
DHA government centre — advantages
- Lowest cost — standard processing at AED 320.

What Happens If Your Result Is Unfit?
Positive HIV or TB result — deportation under UAE law
Under UAE federal immigration law, a positive HIV result or a confirmed active TB diagnosis will result in the applicant being deemed ineligible for a UAE residence visa. Deportation is the legal outcome. These cases are extremely rare — the vast majority of applicants pass. However, this is a firm legal position. The UAE does not currently provide residence visas to people with active HIV or active TB, regardless of medical management or treatment status.
For HIV and TB, there is no appeal process that results in a different outcome under current UAE federal law. The recommended step if you believe a result is incorrect is to seek independent confirmation testing at a private clinic in your home country before the UAE process concludes. Once an 'Unfit' result is formally recorded in the ICP system, it is very difficult to overturn.
For other conditions (Hepatitis B or C, Syphilis), the consequences depend on the visa category. Some categories allow treatment and re-testing. Contact ICP or your PRO / typing centre for specific guidance on your visa category if a Hepatitis or Syphilis result is returned.
Special Circumstances
Pregnant women — X-ray is skipped
Pregnant women are exempt from the chest X-ray component of the medical fitness test. An ultrasound scan or clinical examination substitute is used to rule out obvious contraindications. The blood tests (HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C) are still performed. Inform the registration desk of your pregnancy before beginning the process.
Children under 18 — medical fitness typically not required
Children under 18 applying for dependent residence visas are generally exempt from the medical fitness test in most UAE visa categories. This includes dependent visa children under an employee or investor sponsor. Domestic workers and employment visa applicants of any age are subject to the test.
Do not present foreign medical certificates — results must be UAE-issued
A negative HIV or TB test from your home country, no matter how recent, cannot substitute for the UAE medical fitness test. All results must be produced by DHA, DOH, or MOH-approved centres within the UAE. Foreign medical certificates are not accepted by ICP for visa purposes.
What to Bring on the Day
- Original passport — the officer will check the biographic data page.
- Passport-size photo — white background, recent, no eyeglasses. Most centres have a photo machine on site if you forget (AED 20–30).
- Entry permit — your UAE entry permit number, either the physical stamp or a printout of the permit from your sponsor or PRO.
- Medical application form — some typing centres prepare this for you; others require you to fill it in at the DHA centre desk.
- Payment — cash (AED) accepted at all centres; debit/credit card accepted at Smart Salem and most DHA centres.
Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before the test
While the medical fitness panel does not specifically test for alcohol, heavy alcohol consumption can affect liver enzyme markers and blood panel results. To avoid any interpretive issues with Hepatitis results, avoid alcohol for 48 hours before your test. You do not need to fast — eating a normal breakfast beforehand is fine.
Understanding Your Medical Fitness Result Certificate
When your medical fitness test returns a 'Fit' result, you receive a medical fitness certificate (or 'fitness slip') either digitally via the DHA portal/SMS or as a printed document from the testing centre. This document is a critical step in the UAE visa application chain — it is submitted to ICP alongside your other visa documents to complete Emirates ID issuance and visa stamping.
The certificate contains: your full name, passport number, nationality, date of test, test results summary (Fit/Unfit), reference number, and the issuing centre's details. Store a digital copy of this document — it may be requested by your employer, your insurance provider, and some educational institutions (for children applying to private schools) as additional verification.
The certificate is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. If your overall visa application is delayed and the certificate expires before your visa is stamped, you will need to repeat the full medical fitness test. This is an important reason to keep your visa application process moving without unnecessary delays once the medical fitness test is complete.
Submit your medical fitness result promptly — 3-month validity
Do not let your medical fitness certificate expire before submitting it to ICP. The 3-month window starts from the test date. If your employer or PRO is slow to file the visa paperwork, actively chase them — a lapsed certificate means paying AED 320–770 for a repeat test.
Medical Fitness for Domestic Worker Visas
Domestic workers (household helpers, nannies, drivers, cleaners) applying for UAE residence visas undergo the same medical fitness test as other visa categories, but the application is typically handled by the employer (sponsor) through a typing centre or PRO. The domestic worker must attend the test in person for the blood draw and chest X-ray.
For domestic workers from countries with higher TB prevalence, DHA may request a follow-up or additional X-ray reading. This is standard protocol and does not necessarily mean the result will be Unfit — it may just require a second review by a specialist radiologist. If this happens, the typing centre or PRO will be notified with instructions for next steps.
