Verify before you travel

UAE visa rules change without notice. Information on this page is indicative based on rules current to May 2026. Verify requirements with GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae), ICP (icp.gov.ae), and the US Embassy in the UAE (ae.usembassy.gov) before booking flights.

US citizens and Dubai: the short answer

American passport holders are among the most welcome nationalities in Dubai. You receive a free 30-day visit visa stamped at the airport on arrival — no online application, no agent, no fee. For most tourists and short business trips, that is all you need.

For longer or more frequent visits, the 5-year multi-entry visit visa (available via the ICP portal) gives up to 90 days per visit, unlimited entries, for five years. And for Americans considering a permanent or semi-permanent move, UAE employer-sponsored residence visas and the Golden Visa programme are the routes to long-term residency.

One critical note for Americans: US citizenship-based taxation follows you everywhere. Even while living or working in Dubai, your US tax filing obligations continue. See the US-specific notes below and our full guide at /taxes-for-americans-in-dubai.

What US citizens do at Dubai Airport arrival

  1. 1

Present your US passport at Dubai immigration

American citizens do not need any visa arranged in advance for tourism or short business visits. Walk up to the immigration desk and present your US passport. The officer will verify it has at least 6 months' validity from your entry date.
    Time: 2–5 minutes
  2. 2

Show your return or onward flight ticket

Present your return flight ticket or an onward flight to a third country. A printed confirmation or phone screenshot both work. This is routinely checked for all visitors including US citizens.
    Time: Immediate
  3. 3

    Confirm accommodation details

Have your hotel booking confirmation or the name and address of the person you are staying with. US citizens are rarely questioned extensively at Dubai immigration, but having documentation ready is good practice.
    Time: Immediate
  4. 4

Receive the free 30-day visa stamp

The immigration officer stamps a free 30-day visit visa in your passport. No fee is charged. The 30 days count from the date of entry — note this date carefully to avoid overstay.
    Time: Immediate
  5. 5

    Proceed through customs

Collect your luggage and clear customs. The duty-free allowance is 4 litres of alcohol (or 2 cartons of beer) for non-Muslim visitors. Declare anything of commercial value. US citizens should note that OFAC sanctions rules still apply even while in Dubai — certain financial transactions may be restricted.
    Time: 15–45 minutes

Important US-specific notes

US citizenship-based taxation (CBT)

The US is one of only two countries worldwide that taxes citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. Even if you become a UAE resident and pay zero income tax in Dubai, you must still file a US tax return annually. Key obligations: Form 1040 (annual return), FBAR/FinCEN 114 (if foreign accounts exceed USD 10,000 at any point), Form 8938 (FATCA, if assets exceed thresholds). The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) can shelter up to approximately USD 126,500/year (2026 figure, inflation indexed) of foreign earned income. See /taxes-for-americans-in-dubai for full guidance.

STEP enrollment — 5 minutes well spent

Enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before every trip to Dubai. It is free and allows the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi to contact you in emergencies. Particularly recommended for stays of more than a week.
