Dubai for Families: Why It Works
Dubai has quietly become one of the world's best family holiday destinations. The city has assembled an extraordinary portfolio of child-focused attractions — the world's largest indoor theme park (IMG Worlds), a real snow resort inside a mall (Ski Dubai), a role-play city for children (KidZania), two of the best waterparks outside Orlando (Aquaventure and Wild Wadi), a drive-through safari park, and LEGOLAND — alongside pristine beaches, the Burj Khalifa, and one of the world's most spectacular fountain shows.
The city is also structured for family travel in practical terms: the Metro is stroller-accessible, English is spoken everywhere, restaurants universally accommodate children, and the safety record for tourist-zone Dubai is exceptional. This 5-day family itinerary is designed for children aged 5–15 and parents who want maximum engagement every day without exhausting themselves or their children.
Day 1 — KidZania + Dubai Aquarium + Dubai Fountain
Day 1 is deliberately indoor and air-conditioned — children arriving from long-haul flights need a gentler first day with no sun exposure and flexible pacing. KidZania and the Dubai Aquarium are both inside the Dubai Mall, keeping transit stress to a minimum.
Morning: KidZania (9am–1pm)
Book the 9am first session of KidZania for the widest choice of activities. KidZania is a 75,000-square-foot miniature city where children aged 4–14 take on real professional roles — a fully equipped fire station with actual uniform and simulated rescue missions, a hospital with child-scale medical equipment, a pilot simulator, a newsroom, a bank, a bakery, and 60+ other role-play establishments. Children earn and spend 'KidZos' (KidZania's own currency) — teaching basic financial literacy alongside the play. Adults wait in dedicated parent areas while children operate independently.
Allow 4 hours for KidZania — children typically do not want to leave. Exit at 1pm and have lunch in the Dubai Mall (the Cheesecake Factory, or the international food court for a flexible family meal at AED 30–80 per child's portion).
Afternoon: Dubai Aquarium + Mall Explore (2pm–5pm)
The Dubai Aquarium tunnel walk-through (free with mall entry) is one of the most genuinely impressive experiences in the Mall — the 270-degree acrylic tunnel gives children and adults an immersive walk through the world's largest indoor aquarium tank containing 33,000 marine animals. Full tickets (AED 169/person) add the underwater zoo, glass-bottom boat rides, and cage snorkelling (for older children and adults). For children who love marine life, the full ticket is worth it; the free tunnel view is sufficient for most families.
The Dubai Mall also has a VR Park, an ice skating rink (AED 80–120/session including skate hire), and a large play zone for younger children on various floors. Allow 2–3 hours for the Mall segment.
Evening: Dubai Fountain Show (6pm)
Walk to the outdoor Burj Khalifa Lake promenade for the 6pm Fountain show. The water jets, music, and illuminated Burj Khalifa backdrop are genuinely spectacular and reliably exciting for children. The 6pm show is the first evening performance — arrive 15 minutes early. Dinner afterwards at the Dubai Mall (family-friendly options across every price range) or walk to the Downtown restaurants nearby.
Day 2 — IMG Worlds of Adventure (Full Day)
IMG Worlds of Adventure is a full-day commitment — the world's largest indoor theme park at 1.5 million square feet of entirely air-conditioned entertainment. Arrive at opening (10am) to beat queues for the most popular Marvel rides.
Marvel Zone: Spider-Man, The Avengers, Thor: Thunder Spin, and Hulk rides plus meet-and-greet stations. Minimum height for major rides: 120–130cm. Cartoon Network Zone: Adventure Time (Ben 10 Uprising), The Powerpuff Girls, Regular Show — targeted at ages 5–12. IMG Boulevard: Central area with shops, restaurants, and meet-and-greets for characters from all zones. Lost Valley — Dinosaur Adventure: A convincing dinosaur-themed section with a Predator coaster, Velociraptor 4D ride, and Dino Carousel for younger children.
Tickets are AED 395 per adult and AED 340 per child — book online in advance to save 10–15% and guarantee entry (the park does occasionally cap attendance on peak days). Lunch is available inside the park at food courts (AED 40–80 per meal) — bring snacks for younger children who may eat more frequently. Plan to leave at 6–7pm when younger children begin to tire.
Day 3 — Beach + Wild Wadi or Aquaventure Water Park
Day 3 is water-focused — ocean in the morning, water park in the afternoon.
Morning: Beach (7am–11am)
JBR Beach for families is excellent: wide, clean, with shallow entry water calm enough for younger children, a beach playground, watersports for older children, and the Walk at JBR (beachfront restaurants and cafés) for breakfast. La Mer Beach is slightly quieter with a dedicated splash park area. In November–March, morning beach time is comfortable from 8am.
Afternoon–Evening: Wild Wadi or Aquaventure (12pm–6pm)
Wild Wadi Waterpark(AED 295 adults, AED 260 children, adjacent to the Burj Al Arab): 30 rides and attractions with a strong family ride selection including the Juha's Dhow and Lagoon family area for younger children, Breaker Bay wave pool, and the Wipeout surfing simulator. The backdrop — the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel — is spectacular. Wild Wadi's family offering is strong for ages 4–12.
Atlantis Aquaventure(AED 380 adults, AED 330 children, Palm Jumeirah): 117 waterslides and rides across Aquaconda, Leap of Faith, and the Master Blaster (world's longest water coaster). Aquaventure also includes access to a private 700-metre beach strip on the Palm — an exceptional bonus in hot weather. Better for families with children 8+ who can use most of the major slides.
Dinner on Day 3: return to the hotel for the evening, order room service, or choose one of the family restaurants near JBR Beach — Kids on the Beach (dedicated children's menu, playground), Shakespeare and Co (child-friendly, AED 100–200 per adult), or Rimal Lebanese (family-sized plates, AED 80–150 per adult).
Day 4 — Dubai Safari Park + Global Village (Oct–Apr)
Day 4 pairs a wildlife safari morning with a global evening experience.
Morning–Afternoon: Dubai Safari Park (9am–2pm)
Dubai Safari Park (Dubailand, Al Warqa area) is one of the best-value family days in Dubai — 119 hectares with 2,500+ animals across African, Asian, and Arabian safari zones. The open-sided safari buses carry visitors through lion, giraffe, and zebra territories with animals visible from 5–15 metres. The Village Zone has a giraffe-feeding station (AED 30), a petting zoo for young children, and a reptile walk-through.
Entry: AED 70 adults, AED 30 for children aged 3–12 (under 3 free). Allow 4–5 hours for a thorough visit including the bus safari, Village Zone, and lunch at the in-park food court (AED 30–60 per person). Opening hours are 9am to 5pm Sunday–Thursday, 9am to 7pm Friday–Saturday.
Evening: Global Village (5pm–10pm, Oct–Apr only)
Global Village runs from October to April — if your visit falls within this window, the evening pairing with Safari Park is excellent. Entry is AED 20 per person; most pavilion exhibits and performances are included. The 90+ country pavilions each sell authentic street food and handmade goods from their country. The amusement park zone has rides for all ages at AED 5–20 each. The evening light show and cultural performances run from 7pm.
If visiting outside October–April, substitute Global Village with a family dinner at Wafi City (Egyptian-themed mall with excellent family restaurants), or revisit the Dubai Fountain for a second viewing from a different vantage point.
Day 5 — Ski Dubai + LEGOLAND
Day 5 combines two completely different experiences: real snow inside a shopping mall, and a fully themed LEGO world.
Morning: Ski Dubai at Mall of Emirates (9am–1pm)
Ski Dubai is genuinely one of Dubai's most surreal and beloved experiences — an indoor ski resort with real snow covering five ski runs, a chairlift, and a snow park, all operating at -2°C inside Mall of Emirates while outside temperatures are 25–40°C. For children aged 2–5: the Snow Park is perfect — tobogganing, snow cannons, a building-block zone, and meeting Ski Dubai's resident colony of King and Gentoo penguins (the Penguin Encounter, AED 140 extra, is excellent for young children). For ages 5–15: ski or snowboard lessons with qualified instructors, the chairlift, and the terrain park.
Snow Park tickets: AED 185 per person (children and adults same price). Snow Classic (2 hours on slopes + rental): AED 240–395 depending on age. Book online to guarantee entry and save 10–15%. Allow 3–4 hours including getting dressed in provided snow gear.
Afternoon: LEGOLAND Dubai (2pm–7pm)
LEGOLAND Dubai is at Motiongate Dubai theme park complex in Dubai Land, approximately 30 minutes from Mall of Emirates by Careem (AED 40–60 one-way). The park is perfectly designed for ages 2–12 with 40+ rides and attractions: DUPLO Valley (toddlers and pre-schoolers), LEGO City (interactive police station, fire station, and driving school), LEGO Kingdoms (medieval castle rides), LEGO Technic (thrill coasters for older children), and a LEGO Water Play zone. Tickets AED 275–350 per person; allow 4–5 hours.
Day 5 dinner: the Mall of Emirates attached to Ski Dubai has excellent family dining options (Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, Byron burger). Alternatively, the farewell dinner at any Dubai restaurant that the family enjoyed earlier in the week.

Family Trip Planning: Step by Step
- 1
Book KidZania, IMG Worlds, and Aquaventure well ahead
Priority BookingsKidZania, IMG Worlds, and Aquaventure are the three highest-demand family attractions and sell out on school holiday dates (particularly UAE public school holidays, UK half-term, and Easter). KidZania entrance allows up to 3 hours per visit — book the 9am or 10am session for a morning half-day. IMG Worlds is open-entry (no time slots) but book online to guarantee entry and save 10–20%. Aquaventure online pre-booking typically saves AED 30–50 per person. - 2
Plan age-appropriate pacing — young children tire faster
Family PacingChildren under 7 typically hit a wall after 4–5 hours at a theme park. Build mandatory rest time into each theme park day: either a 90-minute midday break back at the hotel, or a quiet in-park rest area. The 5-day itinerary alternates high-energy days (IMG Worlds, Aquaventure) with moderate days (Safari Park, Burj Khalifa). Do not plan back-to-back full-day theme parks without a rest day in between. - 3
Choose the right hotel — family rooms and kids pools
Hotel SelectionFor a 5-day family trip, the hotel matters more than for adult-only visits. Key features to look for: family room or interconnecting rooms configuration, a kids' pool (shallower pool with splash elements), a kids' club for early evenings, and a reliable restaurant that can handle family mealtimes. JW Marriott Marquis, Dusit D2 Business Bay, and Radisson Blu Dubai Deira Creek all receive strong family reviews. Confirm family room capacity before booking — some "family rooms" only accommodate 3 people. - 4
Carry sun protection for all outdoor activities
Health & SafetyThe UAE sun is intense even in peak season (October–April). Children's skin requires SPF 50+ applied 30 minutes before outdoor exposure and reapplied every 90 minutes. Aquaventure, Wild Wadi, Safari Park, and beach days all involve extended sun exposure. Bring your own sunscreen (substantially cheaper in the UK, US, or Europe than in Dubai). Rash vests for children are recommended at the water parks. Portable shade (parasol) is useful at the Safari Park and beaches. - 5
Download family activity apps and pre-load offline maps
PracticalKidZania has an app showing live role-play waiting times. IMG Worlds and Motiongate (LEGOLAND) have apps with park maps and ride wait times. Google Maps offline for Dubai (approximately 80MB) is essential for navigation between attractions — many are in areas with patchy mobile coverage. Careem should be downloaded and payment method added before departure: the family-sized vehicle option ('Max') fits a family of 4 with stroller. - 6
Pack a changing bag and familiarise children with the heat
PracticalEven in peak season (November–March), Dubai afternoons reach 25–30°C — warmer than most European summers. Children fresh off long-haul flights need a slower first day (hence KidZania as Day 1 — indoor, air-conditioned, and no queuing in sun). Carry water for all children at all times. Midday outdoor exposure on beach or Safari Park days should be limited to before 11am and after 4pm. The Safari Park has good shade throughout.
Theme Parks vs Cultural vs Beach Focus for Families
Why Theme Parks First
- Theme parks and water parks are guaranteed crowd-pleasers for ages 5–15 with minimal planning needed
- Indoor theme parks (IMG Worlds, Ski Dubai) work in any weather including summer heat
- KidZania and LEGOLAND are unique world-class children's attractions not found in most cities
- Predictable, manageable days — park entry includes most activities within ticket price
- Children engage more actively in theme parks than in cultural heritage sites
Why Include Cultural Days Too
- Pure theme park itinerary misses the Old Dubai heritage experience that is genuinely child-friendly
- No Dubai Fountain, Burj Khalifa observation, or creek abra — the iconic Dubai experiences
- Theme park focus significantly increases per-day spend (AED 4,000+ per day for family of 4)
- Children who have visited Orlando or other global theme parks may find Dubai parks less impressive
- Cultural days (souks, Dubai Museum, abra rides) are often more memorable in retrospect for children
