6-Step Document Attestation Chain
- 1
Obtain original document (degree, marriage cert, birth cert)
Step 1Get the official original or certified copy from the issuing authority (university, registry office). Ensure it bears an official seal. Photocopies are not accepted at any stage. Allow 1–4 weeks to obtain originals if you don't already have them. - 2
Apostille (for countries in The Hague Convention) or MFA stamp
Step 2UK: FCDO apostille (2–3 days online via fcdo.gov.uk, AED 30 equivalent). US: state secretary of state apostille (1–4 weeks by state). India/Pakistan: Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) attestation. Non-Hague countries: Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamp in origin country.Cost: AED 50–500 per documentTime: 3 days – 4 weeks - 3
UAE Embassy attestation (in origin country)
Step 3Take the apostilled/MFA-stamped document to the UAE Embassy in your home country. They verify the home country seal and add their own attestation. Book an appointment — walk-ins may not be accepted. Allow 5–10 business days. Cost: AED 150–400 equivalent per document.Cost: AED 150–400Time: 5–10 business days - 4
UAE MOFA attestation (in Dubai)
Step 4Once you arrive in Dubai (or through a PRO/typing service), submit the UAE-Embassy-attested documents to UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). This is the final stage. Cost: AED 50–150 per document. Processing: 3–5 working days. Online submission available at mofa.gov.ae.Cost: AED 50–150Time: 3–5 working days - 5
Official Arabic translation (if required)
Step 5Many government processes require Arabic translations of attested documents. Translations must be done by a UAE-approved Legal Translation Centre. Cost: AED 200–500 per document. Ask your employer's PRO or the relevant authority if translation is needed for your specific use case.Cost: AED 200–500Time: 1–3 days - 6
Submit to the relevant authority in Dubai
Step 6Submit the fully attested (and translated, if needed) documents to: ICA (visa), KHDA (school enrollment), DED (company formation), MOHRE (employment), or Dubai Land Department (property). Keep certified copies — some authorities keep originals. Always get a receipt.Time: 1–5 days
Attestation takes 2–6 weeks — start early
Document attestation is the single biggest scheduling risk in any Dubai visa or setup process. The full chain (origin country MFA → UAE Embassy → UAE MOFA) takes 3–8 weeks for most nationalities. Start the moment you know you are moving or applying — never assume you can do it quickly.
Budget AED 200–1,500 per document for attestation
Each document costs AED 200–1,500 to attested including all stages. A family moving with degree certificates, marriage cert, and birth certs for 2 children may spend AED 5,000–10,000 on attestation alone. Use your employer's PRO agent if they offer this service — corporate accounts often get faster and cheaper processing.
English translations from approved Legal Translation Centres only
Arabic translations of attested documents must come from a UAE Ministry of Justice-approved Legal Translation Centre. Translations from Google Translate, private translators, or overseas translation agencies are not accepted. Find approved centres at the Ministry of Justice website or ask your employer's PRO.
Some documents are valid only 6 months after issue
Medical fitness certificates, police clearance certificates, and salary letters typically have a 3–6 month validity from date of issue. Plan the attestation and submission timeline so documents don't expire before use. Bank statements are typically accepted if dated within 3 months.
