Shopping Malls — Air-Conditioned Heaven

In summer, malls become the town squares of Dubai. They're not just for shopping — they're where Dubai residents eat, exercise, socialize, and take their kids.

Dubai Mall

1,300+ stores

Downtown Dubai

World's largest mall by total area. Dubai Aquarium, Ice Rink, VR Park, KidZania, cinema, 200+ restaurants. You could legitimately spend an entire day here.

Local tip: Avoid Fridays — peak family day. Thursday evenings after 8pm are surprisingly quiet.

Mall of the Emirates

630+ stores

Al Barsha

Home to Ski Dubai, Harvey Nichols, Carrefour hypermarket, and some of Dubai's best restaurant clusters. Slightly calmer than Dubai Mall.

Local tip: VOX Cinemas here has the GOLD screen — worth upgrading for the reclining seats and table service.

Ibn Battuta Mall

270+ stores

Jebel Ali

Themed around the travels of explorer Ibn Battuta — separate sections designed as Andalusia, Tunisia, Persia, India, China, and Egypt. Architecture is stunning.

Local tip: Less crowded than Dubai Mall. The food court is excellent and unusually varied.

Dubai Hills Mall

650+ stores

Dubai Hills Estate

One of Dubai's newest malls (opened 2022). Light-filled, well-planned, less crowded. Mix of luxury and high-street. Excellent food court.

Local tip: Great for families — large kids' entertainment zone and wide corridors.

City Walk

Boutique outdoor district

Al Wasl

Outdoor but fully shaded walkways. Boutique brands, restaurants, and cafes. Not a traditional mall — more of a curated district. Great evening atmosphere.

Local tip: Cooler after sunset. The Green Planet tropical biodome is here — AED 130 admission.

Summer Strategy: Getting the Most Out of It

Early Morning (6am–9am)

This is the only comfortable outdoor time. Beaches, parks, and the JBR Walk are pleasant. Exercise outdoors now or not at all.

Morning (9am–12pm)

Museums, malls, indoor activities. Museum of the Future and Dubai Museum are perfect morning activities when crowds are lower.

Peak Heat (12pm–4pm)

Stay indoors. This is time for IMG Worlds, Ski Dubai, cinema, or mall dining. Never walk outside in peak heat without water and shade.

Evening (4pm–midnight)

Temperature drops to 35–38°C — still hot but bearable. Dubai Marina walk, Downtown, and City Walk become lively. Perfect for water parks (still warm at night).

Closed in Summer

These attractions close or significantly reduce operations during summer months (typically June–October):

  • Dubai Miracle Garden — Closes May, reopens November. One of the world's largest flower gardens.
  • Global Village — Seasonal outdoor market, closed June–October.
  • Dubai Garden Glow — Outdoor light park, closes in summer.
  • La Mer Beach — Open but outdoor sun exposure is extreme 10am–4pm.
  • Desert Safari operators — Many pause or only run evening departures in peak summer.
Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) runs from July to August annually — massive sales across all malls, special events, and promotions throughout the city. If you're shopping for big items, wait for DSS for the best deals.
