When Dubai Is NOT the Right Choice

Dubai is an exceptional city for many people — but it is not right for everyone. Be honest with yourself about these dealbreakers:

  • You want a permanent residency or citizenship pathway. The UAE does not offer a traditional route to citizenship for most expats. Even long-term residents can be required to leave. Golden Visas help but are not citizenship.
  • You cannot handle extreme summer heat. June–September sees temperatures of 40–50°C with very high humidity. Outdoor life effectively stops. If you hate heat, these months will feel like imprisonment.
  • You want a strong social safety net. There is no government unemployment benefit, no state pension for expats, and healthcare is entirely private. You must save and insure yourself aggressively.
  • Alcohol and nightlife freedom is essential year-round. During Ramadan, alcohol service is restricted in many venues (not all), and public behaviour norms are significantly stricter. This affects around 30 days per year.

Why People Choose Dubai

Beyond the numbers, these six advantages explain why hundreds of thousands of skilled professionals choose Dubai over other global cities each year.

0% Income Tax

The UAE levies zero personal income tax. Every dirham you earn is yours to keep. Combined with low VAT of 5%, your purchasing power is significantly higher than in most Western countries.

World-Class Safety

Dubai consistently ranks among the safest cities globally with a safety index above 84. Crime rates are extremely low, streets are safe at night, and scams targeting tourists or expats are rare.

Global Connectivity

Dubai International Airport connects to 260+ destinations across 6 continents. Emirates, flydubai, and dozens of international carriers make Dubai one of the best-connected cities on Earth.

Lifestyle & Entertainment

From Michelin-starred restaurants and world-famous beach clubs to desert safaris and indoor ski slopes, Dubai offers an extraordinary density of leisure experiences in a compact city.

200+ Nationalities

Over 90% of Dubai's population are expats representing more than 200 nationalities. This creates a uniquely cosmopolitan, tolerant culture where every cuisine, language, and tradition is represented.

Modern Infrastructure

Dubai's infrastructure is among the world's newest and most advanced — from a spotless metro system and smart traffic management to ultra-fast fibre internet and state-of-the-art hospitals.

Data Sources & Methodology

Cost of living figures are based on Numbeo 2025–2026 data, Mercer Cost of Living Survey, and ECA International. Salary ranges reflect mid-career expat packages and exclude bonuses. Safety indices are from Numbeo's 2025 city rankings. Currency conversions use approximate 2025 exchange rates and are for indicative comparison only.
